The LotR trilogy is so much better

The effects are so much better than the ever so shiny CGI from the Hobbit.

If you like reading, I would recommend reading the trilogy before watching it, so much richer in story and build up. Either way, the movies are awesome as well.

Watch and read the trilogy. I haven't seen The Hobbit yet. I might just wait until it comes out on DVD.

Tank beats everything

I'd recommend these books by Tolkien in this order: The Silmarillion, The Hobbit, then the LOTR trilogy.

The Silmarillion is the prequel to the hobbit and talks about the universe of Eä, which Middle Earth from LOTR is in
