Subject: Why do people get offended when people say Merry Christmas?

Some people can be offended over extremely tiny things. One of the things that most annoys me when people get offended by it is when people say "Merry Christmas" and people get all snarky about it.

I get that a person may not celebrate christmas, but in my eyes, that's no reason to be offended by the comment. If someone comes up to me and says "Happy Hanukkah" or "Joyous Kwanzaa" or" Happy Eid," although I celebrate none of them, I'm not going to be offended because of it. I'm going to be happy they took the time to wish me well.

Why should I care if I don't celebrate something. You're wishing me to be happy, and you're giving me a nice greeting. Why can'y people just be happy you even received a greeting? It boggles my mind how easily people can be offended by things like this.

So anyone on here, I do not wish to start a flame war, but if anyone on here does get offended when people say "merry christmas" please just tell me why.

And anyone else feel free to share your opinion on it.

People who get offended by little things like that have problems.

Honestly OP, I thought you were going to be oblivious about people of other religions.

Though I've never thought about it like that, I really do like your optimistic view on the matter. People should be happy during the holidays, no matter their religion.

I just don't like the word "Merry". Sounds corny to me.

Be sure to tell everyone how cool you are. If you don't tell them, they won't know.

Probably fundamentalist atheists who's delicate, angry, little sphincters pucker up at the slightest mention of anything religious.

On December 1st, 2012, I met Neil deGrasse Tyson. I shook the man's hand, and even made him laugh. Not much else to do with my life now.

I've never met an individual who was offended by the phrase "Merry Christmas." Moreover, people who actually do take "offense" are in small numbers.

I don't blame you for thinking it ahha. That's usually what most people's argument about the topic is. "They live in 'murica, everyone celebrates christmas. ADAPT"

That's usually what people say. Which is why it's kind of hard to post about this somewhere without starting a flame war.

Switch the words "atheist" and "religious" around, correct for grammar and you're describing yourself.

Signatures are for little kids.

I hear you OP. I said 'Merry Christmas' to a bunch of people today and they didn't return the friendly greeting so I screamed at them that Santa and Jesus hate them.

Exactly, I was expecting that type of thread. This was a pleasant surprise though, so thank you.

I know. The idea that this was actually happening wasn't introduced to me until this year, when both sides of the argument blew what was going on out of proportion.

Thats cute and wrong that you're automatically assuming i'm either of these things. While my post isn't about me, I identify as nothing, so again, nice try.

It's new to me as well, but it also kind of depends on where you live. I live in Canada, and because we're vastly multicultural, some people here get very occupied on being politically correct.
