Subject: Most Innovative Game of 2012.

Explain.

Well he didn't respond so I think that is clear. The game revitalized and opened up a new chapter for the dying adventure game genre and was hugely successful in its story telling. Hell, a lot of people prefer the game over the show (both are based on the comic). The game innovated the adventure game genre in focusing more on the narrative and character development and less on just puzzles. The game makes people want to play the next episode and people enjoy each and every one and gain immersion into the story.

No other game this year has been able to do what TWD has done.

Spec Ops was a great story but there was nothing "innovative" about it. It wasn't the first game to have a proper story or variable endings, or emotional involvement. It was also heavily based on Heart of Darkness and Apocalypse Now, so it's not the most original deep story out there, either.

Spec Ops only stands out because most video games lack stories and personal involvement, which is what the game really did so well. But "innovation"? There were no new features or great steps forward that will make the game remembered.

IMO, DayZ is the most innovative game of 2012 because of it's extreme realism, it's investment into the world which is like no other, and most importantly the tense experiences you have when in the game. It's the closest thing to a virtual reality infested by zombies, and the reaction from playing the game is just amazing.

Agreed with all of that. For me it was also the first game that made me cry. Should tell you enough about the quality of the story.

How many war shooters these days take the route of not glorifying war, but dealing with PTSD, schizophrenia, civilian casualties, and other awful consequences of war? Next to none. All of them are all about "go in there and kill the enemy and the more you kill the more points and medals and -blam!- you get HOO RAH!"

For those looking to vent, get proper advice, or give it to those in need.

I'd say XCOM: Enemy Unknown if we're talking about innovating genres. That presented a new way to play that genre and really reinvigorated it. The Walking Dead reinvigorated the Adventure genre but I don't think it redefined it.

Still wondering why people are under the impression Spec Ops is such an innovative and original game. I'm not saying it's a bad game but do you only play shooters year in and year out?

And it deserves its props for taking an interesting angle. But to then take that and stretch it to "This is the most innovative game this year" or as others have said in a previous thread "This is the most original game this year" is sheer hyperbole.

Spec Ops did not redefine the way we play third person shooters. You wouldn't be wrong to say Firaxis rewrote the blueprints on strategy games with XCOM. There's a big difference between taking an interesting story angle and taking a genre and creating a new benchmark for it.

But Spec Ops broke the mold of modern shooters. XCOM may have written a new book that got pretty popular and was based on the universe of a long-dead author, but Spec Ops totally rewrote a New York Times Bestseller and was still successful. I know, the analogy isn't perfect, but the point stands.

I'm not trying to diminish what XCOM did. It's an excellent game and deserves more then the dues it's received, but Spec Ops's storytelling was just so superb and different from the average game these days that I still have to give it the nod. Was it the best game of the year? No. XCOM was definitely a much better game. But as far as innovation goes with Spec Ops's storytelling, starting out seeming like all the other pro-war games, and then

.

XCOM did arguably just as much to a long-dormant genre in the TBS, but since Spec Ops did it to the most popular genre in gaming at the moment, I think it edges it out.

e: Quote to see spoiler.

While all of that is true, from what I've heard of it, TWD has all of the makings of a great game...without the game part.

Having a fantastic story isn't innovative, it's an expectation of a quality product. Sure the WD may have one, but it is little more than an interactive tv show. How can it be judged on the standards of a game if it's hardly a game? It'd be more fair to judge it on the standards that it presents itself as worthy of being compared too, which is a tv show.

Yeah sure, it's got player choice, but so do these things, and I somehow doubt you'll see one of those win any GOTY awards any time soon.

Recon Number 54 -
If they are still looking, then while holding the snarl, I let drool start to drip from my mouth, I stand, curl my fingers into claws and with a hunched over crouch, I then make slow and deliberate steps towards them. When I get close enough, I let them hear my agonized and gasping growls and then, if they continue to stare, when I get within arm's reach? I kiss them on the nose, and run away giggling.

Spec Ops broke ranks with the usual FPS/TPS and made something very special with it's story.

I think it is the most innovative in it's class.

See, you are still climbing ladders by moving your stick up, you still aim and shoot with the mouse in ego and you run around by yourself and choose where to look for what you need, just like you would in every FPS, Strategy Game or whatever you call game.

I see that it might seem like that, but it's really not just an "interactive movie". It's safe to call it a real game.

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

How is Spec Ops innovative?

I've been waiting a long time for a game to let me experience The Most Dangerous Game.

What house has a rocket pod, has legs, and has a long narrow barrel that probably shoots something powerful?

Sounds like you're describing the lower half of my body, actually.

Journey, definitely. Every game this year can go suck a big fat one.

It's an FPS with a proper story and that's about it. Totally overrated if you ask me.

Is the question posed being which game did best breaking conventional story molds? Maybe Spec Ops wins that category? Maybe it contends for best moment in a game? That doesn't make it the most innovative video game. Innovation is more than just taking an interesting approach to story. It has to be much more than just a moment in the game. That's what Spec Ops fails at. Bluntly put Spec Ops, besides some of the interesting story angles and moments, still plays like a game we've seen plenty of times.
