I've read The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings. what should I go onto now, The similarion or unfinished tales? I've heard that The similarion can be a bit slow and take a while to get entertaining, whereas unfished tales gives you an Idea about what other character where doing at certain times eg. How gandalf got the dwarves to come to bag-end.

I've heard that it is good from a certain point on, but it is slow to get there.

Silmaillion is pretty good if you've got the patience. If you're an LOTR lore junkie like me, Silmarillion is a must have.

It's exactly like this. There is is a 'certain point' where it gets more fast paced. The part that's considered 'slow' is the part of the creation of middle earth. But anybody above 12 years old should be able to read that just fine.

"I will show you how a true Prussian officer fights!"

"And i will show you where the iron crosses grow..."

- "Cross of Iron"

Start with "The Hobbit" it is the "prequel" so to speak to LOTR.

The book was laborious at times, but I enjoyed it. Understanding the lore only enhances your experience when watching the movies.

Guess I'll start there then, It will probably make more sense anyway to read an actually full story, before the collection of small stories.

also is this one the book that details the Istari, or is that Unfinished tales?

Every post whining about the weekly update delays it by 5 minutes.

if Op wants to go chronologically than it should be

1 similirillian
2 children of hurin
3 Hobbit
4 The trilliogy

unfinished tales is a mish mash of stuff that he never finished and has no other lore to it other than in the short story in which it explains itself. This prompted his son having to write like 3 chapters per story to explain anything. I would pass as it is really confusing.

the silmarillion explains gandalf and the like albeit briefly

I can't go chronologically unfortunatley. I've read the Hobbit and the Trilogy.

Tolkien was immensely overrated.

Anything other than LotR is horrible.

I'm currently reading The Silmarillion, and it's quite good. I definitely recommend it.

I tried to read one of his books after reading LotR and the Hobbit but I was considering suicide by the second or third chapter. Can't remember the name of the book though.

The children of hurin or something like that. Just awful.

Is that unrelated to the LoTR universe, or is that another name for unfinished tales?
