I studied music at school, and I would say that most - actually, all - music genres do require some kind of musical knowledge, even the ones that seem as though they don't. People complain about electronic musicians being talentless, but that isn't true - composing electronic music still requires not only musical knowledge, but knowledge of the equipment used to make it, which is similar to having to learn any other musical instrument.

I guess I would say that classical and jazz music require more talent to perform, though not necessarily to compose. Other than that, though, I think you do need to be talented to compose or perform any kind of music, so I don't understand why people say some genres don't require talent. What do you think?

They all require a brain, except GANGSTER rap.

Yes. Pop music is REALLY easy to play and write.

Jazz, especially Bop, is disgustingly difficult, and has a HUGE learning curve.

A cornered fox is more dangerous than a jackal.

And from FOX, two phantoms were born.

Well I think it depends on what your good at.

A person who is good at singing may have an equal level of talent with someone who is good at the drums.

...

If that makes sense.

I would say orchestras, or anything that requires many levels of instruments.

Composing for that kind of thing takes skill. Making sure the notes fit into the key, transposing, finding the balance between instruments, getting the right sound out, making sure the rhythm flows with everyone playing.

A challenge, but worth it in the end.

I learned about jazz composition at school. I am...not the greatest at it. Not bad, but it is hard compared to string quartet and the other composition pieces I had to do.

If you're a professional rapping pianist, then of course!

Though I have to agree that to perform classical/jazz music take more talent to do so than others... Even composing such music is difficult.

Be sure to tell everyone how cool you are. If you don't tell them, they won't know.

It all takes a certain level of talent. Just different kinds of talents

BAN ALL BRONIES

yeah.

i mean when it comes to mainstream pop, rap, dubstep, etc. I don't think you would need much, just money to pay people to write a catchy song for you every now and then. Or if you can do it yourself with little effort that works too i guess.

Yes and no.

Yes, it makes sense that two people can be at a similar level in talent with two separate instruments.

However...how does one exactly go about trying to measure that? How can you compare a singer's vocal range and tone to a drummer's ability to keep the rhythm and beat and the ability to play a variety of percussive instruments?

I do see what you are saying, it's just that how would someone go about doing it?

You can't, really. The ability to sing and play drums are two different sets of skills, of which neither person may be able to do the other. It isn't really comparable.

I guess if you only compose songs that follow popular chord progressions, that's easier than composing more original music. But not all popular music follows the same patterns. There are examples of original or innovative popular music. Do those require more talent?

$.50 in store credit.

No, because the genre doesn't specifically dictate how you have to compose and perform your music. Musical skill in entirely on an individual artist/band basis.

Please stop complaining about the 'death of a loved one' it's my job. They probably deserved it anyways. Here's a warning, if you keep making pentagrams out of the neighbors livestock I will personally come to your house and kill everyone you love. Now leave me alone, I got to get back to work.

Not necessarily... It could be music that just catches on with an audience despite simplicity. For example, the Beatles mostly used a basic I, IV, V, I chord progression pattern, literally the basics that a child learns when learning an instrument or music theory. Musicality wise, it's simple, but they were massive.

  • 12.30.2012 6:58 PM PDT

What?

It really depends on how you define "talent," because some genres of music are not enhanced by complicated, overly technical musicianship.

I think that "talent," if used to mean the musician's ability to create a successful song that fits the genre and/or ability to evoke emotions, then yes, all genres require talent.

tl;dr : Not all genres need technical skill or ability, because "talent" encompasses a wider variety of abilities than that.

The Beatles also made heavy use of modal scales, which are definitely not a part of conventional pop music.

Classical? Hell no.
It's basically an ABA pattern. But the last A is a bit of a remix.

Plenty of classical music requires virtuoso-level talent to play the way it's meant to be played.
