Did his experiments at Black Mesa cause the Portal Storms that drew the attention of the Combine and their eventual invasion?

While he is the hero, is he also the source of all the problems too?

It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank god that such men lived. ----------- No Bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country. (both by George S. Patton jr.)

why a murder train?Well, The Blues revolve around trains, and I'm trying to be Blues-y about it.
I think a t-rex sounds better, I mean Murder T-rex. just think about it.
This made my day.

Well, was involved with opening the portal that started the initial invasion, which led to the 7 hour war.
So yeah, he did cause it.

Depends. The blame could be placed on him, the G-Man, Breen, Eli, etc.

By the time Half-Life 2 rolls around it doesn't really matter.

No, it matters.

He is cast a a messianic figure. This would be like the source of redemption also being the father of sin.

If he is the reason the Combine came in the first place, shouldn't he be a person reviled by the community? Shouldn't they be yelling for him to stop, lest he invite a greater disaster on everyone?

Greater disaster?

You mean like blowing up a city and letting an advisor free?

at the start of HL1 he's just the pencil pusher and unwitting pawn of the g-man. if you're going to blame anyone other than the suit it should be breen (and possibly eli) for trusting such an obviously-evil person.

The Advisers were already free to begin with. They were the Combine leadership caste.

But, the last time he tried to help, he signaled the Combine to Earth. In ousting the Combine, what evil will he unwittingly unleash this time?

I think it's because, while a number of people could be blamed for the Black Mesa Incident, he is irrefutably the one who stopped it.

He's proven himself, and continues to do so throughout the events of HL2 and the episodes.

I was referring to him letting the one loose that ended up killing a leader of the resistance.

No. He was involved in the experiment but it was not his fault. Things were going wrong before his role and he was just a recent phD I believe. If you're going to blame anyone, you can blame Dr. Kleiner or Dr. Vance, and definitely Dr. Breen as he was the administrator.

They didn't really cover how much he knew about research teams going to Xen pre-Resonance Cascade to get the cystals, so I doubt he was thinking it could have ended as badly as it did. But yet again playing Blue Shift, and Opposing Force and I think Half Life it self it shows that it wasn't just a small experiment which no one knew how bad it was going to be, they had all those test chambers filled with Xen creatures.

I say he wasn't informed of the whole situation, so no. I think he's innocent.

  • 12.30.2012 9:32 PM PDT

You can't pinpoint a single person is responsible for the entire Black Mesa incident. I wouldn't doubt it if G-Man was somehow connected to the disaster.

At a minimum he's an accomplice in it.

This would be the equivilent of finding out that the real reason for the Human-Covenant War is that Master Chief was sent to spy on the Covenant and got jumpy and shot the Prophet of Truth's Brother.
