If he is the reason the Combine came in the first place, shouldn't he be a person reviled by the community? Shouldn't they be yelling for him to stop, lest he invite a greater disaster on everyone?

You mean like blowing up a city and letting an advisor free?
The Advisers were already free to begin with. They were the Combine leadership caste.
But, the last time he tried to help, he signaled the Combine to Earth. In ousting the Combine, what evil will he unwittingly unleash this time?
I was referring to him letting the one loose that ended up killing a leader of the resistance.
