I didn't say online friends aren't friends, I said they're not the same as real life friends. I still talk to people on Facebook that I played XBL with years and years ago, and I have a penpal in Australia that I've known for about 12 years now.

But these friends are not the same as my real life friends. I can never go and get coffee with these people, hug them, see them, etc. These friends can't just come drive to your house and hang out with you. They can never be there for you like real life friends.

And I mean, God forbid there was a power outage. Where are your friends now?

What does that have to do with the fact that that person is your friend?

No, they can't give you a ride if your car breaks down, but that has nothing to do with how a deep an understanding and connection you have between each other.

A victim? No one claimed to be a victim here. I am well aware of the fact that I made my own decisions and paid the price for them. I have admitted that several times now. Not sure where that comment came from.

It seems to me that you feel sorry for yourself about your past in gaming.

Exactly how many in depth and personal conversations do you have while cappin' baddies?

I just don't think that an e-friend can ever be closer than a real life friend. Maybe if these e-friends are all you have, but I don't see how anyone who has friends in real life can disagree with me. I've been in the online-friend world before. You can only get so close to them when you're so far away.

Even if so, so what? We realize that our past selves were kind of deluded (at least that's how I would describe myself), and now we wish we would have done better or learned faster. Feeling sorry isn't the same as feeling entitled to pity from others. It's more like saying, "Well, what a shame. I could have done better."

And hold the phone--Halifax?? Is that really you???

Not really. I'm not proud of it, but man did I learn a lesson. It sure makes me a lot more grateful for my life now.

Simple Plan for ever! Yes I'm a emo and I don't care what you say. I love all my friends and my guitars! Emo4life! <3

Probably depression, which is natural. It'll go over time, just don't focus on it.

Dude, I have posted at least three times in the past two years. I don't see how you haven't noticed me. Color me completely offended.

I just don't think that an e-friend can ever be closer than a real life friend. Maybe if these e-friends are all you have, but I don't see how anyone who has friends in real life can disagree with me. I've been in the online-friend world before. You can only get so close to them when you're so far away.

Distance has nothing to do with it.

I'll agree the majority of people you meet online you forget about the next day, but other times you establish a true friendship with someone. And that, for me, is special, offline or online.

But how do those friendships hold up to your close, personal, "real-life" friends? Can they really be there for you in your time in need? Can you take your XBox to the bar? To a concert? To the beach? Can you make love with these people, if it comes to that? Can you blow off steam with a boxing match, if it comes to that?

And come on, "you are who you are"? That is a little platitudinous, don't you think? What is that even supposed to mean? Who you are is determined by many things, all of which we may sum up as context. Gaming can be part of your context; it can help determine who you are at a given moment.

However, as I said, and as I believe deeply, you are not inherently anything or anyone. You always change.

I know, some jerk stole my name while I was gone. I feel like I have to prove my relevance all over again...which would account for why I've only made like three posts since coming home.

Oh, on topic...umm too much gaming is bad, we should exercise self-control, and friends come in all shapes and sizes. Also, listen to this.

I think it's quite obvious to everyone you can't physically interact with someone online.

That doesn't mean you can't have a connection with one another.

Exactly. If you are exaxtly the same as you were 10 years ago I feel bad for you. And I'll feel bad for you if you're exactly the same in 10, 20... 50 years from now.

I said gaming doesn't change your personality.

I said gaming doesn't change your personality.

Gaming ---> Excessive gaming ---> Lack of interaction with others ---> Antisocial ---> Depression

Does this describe every person on the face of the planet who has ever picked up a video game controller? Of course not. But is it a dangerous reality for many, many people? Absolutely.
