"Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened."
- Dr. Seuss

Left halfway through the movie.

The constant singing instead of talking was just too much...(Just not my cup of tea)

Anyone else see it, opinions?

Talk about not being cultured... I would love to see the movie and in fact it's on top of my priority lists for new movies to watch!

"It is the cruelest fate, to have written words that meant well and see them made wicked and unwise. What was meant to encourage life, used instead to justify taking it."

It's a musical, of course there was going to be singing.

I thought it followed the musical and the original novel very well, and the actors did a wonderful job (except for Russel Crowe, who was underwhelming IMO).

The original stage production is an operetta, with no speaking parts whatsoever.

Unsuccessfully trying to bring science and reason to The Flood...

My parents first played me a tape version of Les Mis when I was really young. I've also seen a stage version several times. The songs have a pretty high nostalgia value for me.

Did you really not know what Les Miserables was before you went to see it?

I knew it had singing but I honestly thought it was periodically like most movies.

My mistake haha.

I admit Russell Crowe should do as little singing as possible, but I think the movie would have got slaughtered if it didn't have the singing element to it.

I haven't seen the movie but I've seen it on stage twice, so I'm assuming I'd be fine with the singing.

Nothing is true. Everything is permitted.

I've been thinking of going to see this movie, but I've never liked musicals.

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

-40% close ups
-40% awkward close ups
-10% epic shots
-10% mixed bag

Which was frustrating to watch sometimes. The editing was also frustrating, you could feel the brisk pace trying to cut down the time as much as possible. The little seconds to breath between each song are just not there and it's pretty clear they once were. So instead you've got no time to stir between numbers. There was maybe one or two establishing shots, and almost all jump-cuts to the next scene. That editing is just unfortunate.

Singing was alright, but with this movie the singing quality isn't really the point because a film has different rules and goals than the stage. In the film the singing is more like dialogue than performance, it's just there to communicate emotion and character and that's it. It does that well enough. But casting Russell Crowe is still absolutely baffling to me.

But, probably because I'm already a theater person and huge Les Miserables fan, I still liked it. It's sort of like the Hobbit for me, I can pick out real problems with it, but somehow they don't really matter that much.

LOL @ OP not knowing what he was going to see.

I still enjoyed it, but I wish they had helped poor Russel Crowe out on his nasally singing. But hey, he was on pitch and better than I could do. You can't say he only accepts parts as "badass" now - has has added "badass that sings" to that list.

Anne Hathaway's complete performance and Hugh Jackman's acting (not as much his singing, but still good) saved it.

There already is a non-musical film adaptation of Les Mis.
