Hey Flood, my little brothers birthday is coming up in 2 weeks and he's always been into astronomy and I was thinking of buying him a telescope for his birthday. Does anyone know of any decent telescopes for under $100?

I've looked at websites but I'm no good at telling what are and what aren't good specs for a telescope. Help would be appreciated, thanks! :]

Unsuccessfully trying to bring science and reason to The Flood...

If it is his first telescope you are going for then you don't have to go too complex.

I found this in about 1 minute.

Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

I'd recommend a reflector over a refractor.

He's owned a telescope before, not an amazing one, but good enough to look at the moon up close. I wanted to get him something a little better, he certainly knows how to work one as well as he's usually the one helping me use the thing.

Then, like someone else said, it will be hard to find a better telescope for under 100. My advice would be to find out the magnification of the one he has already. Then you can search around for some with better magnification at a reasonable price.

What are the differences? Pros and cons?

Well, he's not looking for something professional, I don't think. I'm just looking to upgrading his old telescope.

I think it was reflector takes in more light which gives a better image. Could be wrong.

This is actually true. If your budget is $100 you're better off buying a good pair of binoculars. In terms of sky viewing those binoculars will greatly outperform that $100 telescope.

Well, that was my budget but I don't mind going over, I'm willing to spend more. I was planning on getting him other gifts but instead I could save that money and just get him a good telescope.

Wow, thanks Recon! This really helped actually. Looks like I may save up a little more money and just buy him one gift.

13 turning 14 and he likes to view the moon, for one since it's easy to spot and all, but he likes to observe other objects such as stars and tried to find a planet, can't recall which one, one of the gas planets.

Jupiter is a good planet to view since its close to Earth only 400 million miles right now and its the biggest planet in our solar system.
