Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

More than anything, I am dismayed at how college (and now high-school) sports are becoming less and less about having local/regional teams/players/students/parents participate and enjoy their team play in a sport and more about becoming a recruitment system for professional sports.

IMO, it has a lot of downsides.

It creates false hope and unrealistic expectations that any local star is destined to go pro and as such, focuses on their play rather than their education.

It seduces and undermines the primary function of schools (both college and high-school) as places of education and turns them into small to large businesses focused on ticket sales, attendance, licensing, promotion and the money making aspect of sport.

You should talk to Kentucky's John Calipari.

Scum of the CBB world.

It makes people think they're so tough and then after that they start acting tough when the only thing they know is tackling, which won't help you if you're getting robbed.

Most sports make people feel tough, due mainly to pride and physical fitness, both of which are typically gained from sports. Should we ban all sports? Should we ban anything that makes one feel "proud"?

Besides, this is a complete stereotype. There are many people who don't act "tough" due to football.

Then everyone makes such a big deal out of it and act like maniacs OVER a GAME.

Perhaps we should also ban videogames. People tend to get very upset in regards to them, especially on forums such as the Flood. Should we ban them? Of course not.

American football is the only timed sport that I know of where the players stand around more than playing.

Not the kind where a foot is used, american football. I hate it for the following reasons,. It makes people think they're so tough and then after that they start acting tough when the only thing they know is tackling, which won't help you if you're getting robbed. Then everyone makes such a big deal out of it and act like maniacs OVER a GAME. Sorry for ranting but it just annoys me so much that football makes people like this. It's pathetic. Discuss your opinions.

1. Anything can make someone feel tough. Ive seen people fight over halo games.
2. You're right its just a game, but to me, and many other people its more than a game. Its what we revolve our lives around, We take pride in our team. Have you ever spend your August in 100 degree weather doing 2-a-days? You form a bond with your team, you never want to lose.
3. Its not pathetic. Its called being competitive. Something that is essential to success in sports as well as in life.

OK.
Point is, players in American football don't play 60 minutes of football. They play a lot, lot less.

It is one reason I am actually losing great interest in American football.

Whats your point.

In hockey, you only take 30 second to 1 min shifts.
In baseball, you stand around.
In soccer, Half the team stands around or walks.

And yet I still find it far more fascinating than the marathon that is soccer. It's a real life chess match. There is so much more to it than what you apparently see. To each their own, right?

Baseball isn't a timed game, if you read my first statement. In hockey, there is much more movement in a span of time than a five second play in American football before a ton of time is wasted before the next snap.

In soccer, there is much more running on a much larger field for 90 minutes and lost time is added into extra time to fulfill the 90 minutes.

In basketball, a full 40 minutes of game is played and play doesn't stop until a foul is committed or a timeout is called. There could be a 10-minute frenzy in basketball of running and scoring and clock won't stop until play is dead.

I wish it was the same in American football.

Unless you're full court pressing all game, Basketball isnt all that fast paced.

Football is perfect the way it is.

I am not talking about pace, I am talking about play time. No matter what the approach a coach takes in basketball, time will run until a foul or a timeout is called.

I absolutely hate how 3:00 can be left in the fourth quarter of a football game with a score of say 23-20 and the leading team can run those 3:00 minutes out with near full security of the ball.

Other timed sports aren't so safe, like basketball, hockey, and soccer.

Well then the opposing coach wasted his timeouts and deserves to lose. Even then the D can still force a turnover.

Soccer matches do this all time time. If its 2-1 with 88 min left, the winning team will kill clock.

The goal is the size of an SUV and the ball is tiny yet they can't seem to get the small ball inside of the giant goal more than about 6 times in 90 minutes hence marathon.

I have never seen a 10 minute frenzy in a basketball game. There is a foul about every couple of minutes and both teams get quite a few time outs. I miss my Sonics.
I wish it was the same in American football.I think it's fine

Absolutely, but they don't have the sad benefit that American football players do, which is after a play is dead the clock keeps running.

In soccer, as you mentioned, I hope you remember that play is still live. Opposing players can attack for possession. No matter how much time is left. In football, this cannot be done.

I simply don't like all the wasted play time there is in American football, not to mention with all of the security during possession.

It's all part of the strategy the Head coaches must use to win a game. It's not a simple sport by any stretch.

I wouldn't be against an athlete having to stay all four years at a university and graduating before being able to go pro. This is especially bad in college basketball where athletes can be "one and done" - meaning they only have to play one year of college ball before entering the NBA draft.

Many school sports "make people" like that, not just American football.
Or maybe, people who are like that prefer certain sports?

Not really, i've known ass-hat alpha types from every organized sport, including soccer. It's not the sport, it's the mentality of belonging and think that their exclusivity gives them a leg-up.
