Everything you know is wrong.

I absolutely hate how 3:00 can be left in the fourth quarter of a football game with a score of say 23-20 and the leading team can run those 3:00 minutes out with near full security of the ball.
Please. Burning 3 minutes of time is pretty difficult. A team would have to have all their remaining timeouts and it still wouldn't be easy. That's part of the strategy. Sometimes it results in the other team having possession with less than a minute to go and they have to get down the field and into scoring position in that amount of time.
If you look at a basketball game with is 30.5 seconds left in the second half (I am using college here), both teams have no timeouts left and the score is 88-86, I think it would be much more difficult for either basketball team to win. Play is live, it can be stopped by players, or possession could suddenly turnover to the team trailing. 30.5 seconds is a lot of time in basketball.
In my original football example, one first down and a few kneels and the game is over. 3:00 may seem like a lot of time, but all the time that can be killed, and so safely, ... There isn't much the defense in the football game can do.
All I am saying is I wish the full 60-minutes in football was used as play, not as a simple time frame.
I am also a little partial to timed games where time is fully of the essence. :)
