By sharp and flame; a friend of a friend.

I've only ever seen this happen twice, personally, but you see it in movies/TV shows all the time. (Lol)

A marine, or some other type of military personnel, usually just recently back from deployment, walks around in public or goes to a social gathering still wearing their 'work' attire. Someone stops and inquires about them being in the service, or makes it a point to bring them to attention among a crowd and thank them for their service. They then act humbled and modest, insisting they didn't do anything special, acting as if the attention they garner is unwanted and/or undeserved.

If they don't want attention or acknowledgment then why make it a point to wear your military get up, or some part of it in public. I thought they weren't allowed to that anyway.

That's not nearly as bad as the ones that go around declaring to all they see that they intend to go into service, or people that were in service and insist on making sure everyone they meet knows it, then continue to act modest...

Discussion value;

Are you or anyone you know in the service of their country? Do you plan to be, or were you? Also, since the topic occurs in crappy lifetime movies on occasion, discuss how much you hate Lifetime.

I like to play Reach for fun. I hate MLG, campers, armor lock, and team killers because they ruin that fun. Deal with it.

"Men Are Terrible and Will Hurt You Because This is Lifetime" is my favorite show. Don't hate on the network.

I've got a fan!

You will never see a Marine in their utility uniform off-base...Army does it a lot though.

And yes, Lifetime sucks.

Im a anime fan. If you every need a anime recommendation just PM me. Currently watched over 280 anime.

Didn't read OP to make that clear.

Most army men are modest because they are trained to be respectful.

  • 12.31.2012 11:53 AM PDT

Studies show that men think about sex every 7 seconds. I do my best to eat hotdogs in under 6, just so things don't get weird.

Please allow me to introduce Myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
I've been around for a long, long year

Why should they change out of uniform unless they have to? They aren't trying to get attention, and really just feel they are doing their job.

"Hello. My name is Stephen Hawking. Physicist, cosmologist, and something of a dreamer. Although I cannot move, and I have to speak through a computer, in my mind, I am free. Free to explore the universe, and ask the big questions."

I don't have a lot of personal experience in the matter, but a cousin of mine(who lives pretty close by) served in Afghanistan and around Europe as MP in the army. She wore military paraphernalia sometimes on her return, but was very modest about it, leading me to think it was a matter of inward pride and respect for those she served with, not all of whom survived.
Admittedly, some people are probably jerks about it. But not all of them.

  • 12.31.2012 11:55 AM PDT

In some cases they really haven't done anything. My brother had his foot injured at base and had to wear a cast and use crutches. When he was at the airport coming home people were swarming him thinking he was some hero who was injured in combat. In reality it was that some soap holder thing had fallen and sliced into his foot.

  • 12.31.2012 12:12 PM PDT

Maybe they're proud of what they're doing? just a thought.

for the uniform thing, not the modesty.

All of my this.

It's out of regs for us to wear cammies off base unless it's an emergency.
Even that Sergeant(?) that stood outside the school in cammies is taking a hit for doing so. I don't agree with the Corps taking action against him, but such is the strict nature of it.

because they probably didn't or genuinely feel that way..

The majority of military sit behind a desk all day, to be completely honest with you.

Yes I know people in the military.

Yes, I'm the guy who had the Flood admit to being furries.

Maybe because they don't always want to talk about the people they've killed, their friends who they saw die befoe their eyes. They don't feel it's right to boast about killing people. It was only part of their job.

I've never seen it. Hell, my cousin is spec ops and I've never seen him in person with his BDU on. He also doesn't boast. He doesn't need to either. The man cracked a rib during a training exercise the day before he came over and acted as if nothing had happened and was only on mild painkillers.

My third montage!

A military service member may not wear their uniform while attending any type of political function, such as a Democratic or Republican rally.

I was in the Air Force for almost 10 years. The only time I wore my uniform in public was as I was going to and from work as I lived off base.

I don't go around telling anyone or everyone about my service. If they ask what I did for a living, I tell them. Usually that is when I get the thank you's for my service. I say you're welcome and thank them for being supportive of military. I never tried to glorify what I did but I was always humbled by praise others placed on me. I'm proud of my time in the military but I've never sought to glorify my time in the service.

That's epic. Would have played that up hard.

As far as being "modest", it's true for the most part. War is incrediably easy, and when asked "how did you do it?" the only honest answer is to say it wasn't hard and you didn't do much. All you really do on a day to day basis is wake up, don't get shot, eat, and go to bed. That's no different than getting your mail from your mailbox on a daily basis.

As far as the wear of the uniform, it depends on the situation. I personally only wear my uniform off base if it's for a special occasion (such as seeing family) and even then it's a rarity because of the attention it garners. Wearing a uniform is a major hastle, actually, so most don't wear it and those that do wear it rarely. Can you imagine walking through an airport and being stopped every 5 seconds so someone can either condemn you or thank you? It's annoying as hell, and nobody wants that much attention.

He was actually a PFC that was in less than a year (including boot camp) that never deployed and lied about his experience, rank, and discharge to the media.

There was another actual Marine who was retired as a SSG and did the same, which is how Plusely (the faker) got the idea.

Roll with the hits, not under them.

No, you can't have it. But thanks for asking!

Technically it's not legal for ANY service member to wear their uniform off duty, but it's very common for service members to be in uniform on the way home from post if they live off base. I know not many people have the time to say, drive from post to home, change into civis, and then pick up their kids at school, so there's usually a good number of folks still in uniforms grabbing their kids from sports practice around 1800. However, if you see somebody in uniform head into a bar, or diner, they're in violation of regulations in a very big way. I've seen the National Guard and Reserve folks spend a lot of extra time in uniform after drill, but they don't quite have to live and breathe the same set of standards as regular active duty military.

I'm retired U.S. Army, and I don't ever walk around wearing parts of my old uniforms, except occasionally I'll wear one of my old gray PT shirts around the farm. I do occasionally wear some of my campaign commemoration t-shirts, and I often wear bracelets in memory of fallen fellows. I have veterans license plates on all my trucks, and a few Division stickers on my rear window, but other than that I don't generally go out of my way to let the world know I'm a vet.

Personally, I find it very awkward when people find out and then thank me for my service, because I truly would rather have people recognize the soldiers that made the ultimate sacrifice, and their families, who are left bereft. I survived. That's thanks enough. The guys and gals who didn't, now they're the ones who deserve remembrance and recognition.
