It is not shallow, it is just simple. How would something have depth in mechanics if the fight system is simple to begin with?

But it's too simple, I don't understand how I enjoy it so much. Same goes for Halo gameplay, yes even Reach and Halo 4, too.

Well, simplicity goes along with purity and a sense of ease. It's more of an appeal to people who don't want to think about game mechanics and factors that add up in the game. Halo is okay, it's not simple at all, but it is shallow. There is a metagame to it and with each every AA, weapon, and even map corner, there is something that does make the game less simple.

Just because something is simple doesn't mean that it can't be deep. For example, Go is a very simple game, I could teach it to you in five to ten minutes, but for you to master it, it would take a lifetime of study. Even the strongest computers in the world with tons of computational power struggle to defeat the strongest players.

I see, but I do like complex game mechanics, and gameplay with depth.

ITT: Nostalgia over an outdated game.

Nope.

Yep. Morrowind is worse in every aspect now get over it.

Got it 4 years ago, and I still have it and play it, and I disagree completely.

This.

Also Morrowind's combat isn't as bad as it's made out to be:

First and foremost, low skill or low fatigue = low chance of hitting. This is the dice roll most refer to right?

Second: Your melee weapon does either thrust, chop, or slash damage depending on how you move with that weapon. To thrust your weapon you move forwards or backwards, to chop you stand still, and to slash you move side to side. For example a spear does tremendous thrust damage while moving forwards or backwards, thus when playing a character with a spear it affects how you play the game significantly with your movement consisting of hitting and moving backwards, never letting your opponent get too close. Most people simply don't understand Morrowind's combat system, it's really not so bad.

I dunno but I like the combat system on Assassin's Creed 3 which was better done than Assassin's Creed 2.

I love both. Back in the day I used to play a game called Guild Wars and it's high end PvP was massively in depth and rich with mechanics. Even higher than popular competitive games today. There is like a science to every game that has complex design.

If skyrim were good, they would make the game exactly like dark souls.

It would be too hard.

Doc: "i'm a pacifist"
Caboose: "your a thing that babies suck on?"
Tucker: "no dude, that's a pedephile"
Church: "tucker, i think he means a pacifier"

Both simplicity and complexity have their time and place, good devs know when to use both. Pushing mechanics that work in certain ways onto everything is a terrible decision.

Also don't you think Skyrim and Morrowind's dungeons designed simply?

  • 12.31.2012 2:32 PM PDT

You're bad and you should feel bad, OP. Just kidding, yeah I love Elder Scrolls combat. And yes the dungeons are simply designed, it doesn't mean they're not fun though. I love most Elder Scrolls dungeons.

  • 12.31.2012 5:35 PM PDT

Minecraft.

  • 12.31.2012 5:43 PM PDT

So Minecraft is the reason Skyrim's combat is fun. It all makes sense now.

  • 12.31.2012 5:47 PM PDT

If a man is not willing to die for something then he is unfit to live.

When you make something overly complicated it becomes a chore to play. Forcing someone to play a certain way turns many people off. If you're able to go into a fight without worrying so much about what ifs then you're more relaxed when you entire a fight.

What a waste....

Because they are easy to understand.

Personally, if Skyrim had Dishonored's sword combat I would love it. The block in D is very functional and the mouse wheel selection is nice. Two handers would be the same.

The problem is, blocking doesn't negate damage in Skyrim. It lessens it, to an extent, but backing up is usually a better approach since enemies are so slow to attack.

  • 12.31.2012 5:56 PM PDT

OP, simple doesn't mean bad. The simplest and shallowest things can be best. Even with no depth.

  • 12.31.2012 6:00 PM PDT

Oh and OP, Skyrim combat is much more freestyle than most games, so that could be another reason you enjoy it alot.

When I can summon a pair of demonic overlords to do my bidding while I sit back and cackle like Ming the Merciless then the combat system is doing it right.

What?

Simple combat is generally better, but I didn't even really enjoy Skyrim's combat.

Yes, it's fun to have your demons own everyone.
