What's the point of the top comment section on Youtube?

Whenever I watch videos, the top comments are usually some random or weird thing.

On one video, I made a comment about the Oakland Raiders. The comment had nothing to do with the video. It got 50 thumbs up (the most thumbs any of my comment ever received) and stayed in the top comment section for at least a month.

"Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened."
- Dr. Seuss

Because its a comment that people approve of?

I don't know, I think its fun...is it really that big of a deal?

*Sigh*

A cornered fox is more dangerous than a jackal.

And from FOX, two phantoms were born.

Thumbs up if you're listening to this in 2012

There's a word for what I am, but I can't pronounce it.

BFA, CCS - olde and bony & one minute musings.

Well, it does work by design. Youtubers liked it enough to deem it relevant, irrelevant, funny, unfunny, interesting or uninteresting enough to represent a consensus. Voting at play.

Top comments are usually funny.

Dear tomorrow, Find some sensibility, Respond to emotion.
Dear Politician, Define sagacity,
All chances of survival are beginning to diminish.
Comedy is no excuse for our own blasphemies.
Mass media, Mass pessimism, Mass Denial.
My television tells me to panic, but I don't think I'll listen.
The apathetic force us to persevere, with their backwards priorities.

Does it matter? I feel that anyone who hates top comments is jealous. If one truly did not care for comments, he would not read them.

Some top comments actually contain useful info such as when there's a sale on a particular PC game on steam for a new game that you just found out about.
