... and not Playstation 2!

Before I say anything, please know that all my info is backed up HERE on IGN's web site. So I don't wanna hear any dumb remarks from people trying to teach me history lessons about the origins of Halo.

Okay, back in the days good ole Bungie wasn't owned by Microsoft, and was partially owned by believe it or not Rockstar Games and Take Two. Back in those days, Bungie was developing the two games Oni and Halo for Playstation 2. And of course, as we all know, in the year 2000 Microsoft decided to buy the 20% stock that Take Two had in Bungie and claim the company as their own to make games for Xbox. Oni actually did come out for PS2, but Halo became an exclusive for Xbox :)

Now my question is, what if Microsoft never bought Bungie? What if Halo came out for PS2? If any of you people actually watched the PS2 trailer for the game, you would have laughed.

First of all, Master Chief (or the Spartans since there were more than one in the trailer) they looked like crap lol their visors were frickin' huge and ugly, and they obviously looked like PS2 character models. Basically, Halo 2's Master Chief smokes these guys with ease.

Secondly, the Elites look way different than they do on Xbox, they look more like lizards and obviously look ridiculous like the Spartans do.

Thirdly, the only positive thing I have to say about the PS2 trailer is the main theme from the Xbox is the same thing as in the trailer. That's it. Other than that, the game would have looked very dumb compared to the almighty Xbox version.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not dissing Bungie in the least, I'm dissing PS2. Bungie was obviously restrictive in what they could achieve on the hardware of PS2. And I think Microsoft buying them out was one of the best things to happen to them (and us obviously). But it's funny to think that our beloved Master Chief would have been doomed to a mere crappy PS2 character model with the warped visor and lizardy Elites lol

Feel free to comment on my little post :)

An interesting tidbit:

In the original game design, Master Chief could shoot a sidearm while driving the Warthog.

Nice post, long and convincing. I think the move by microsoft was good on both sides, it made me buy an Xbox (exactly what Microsoft wanted), it has made Bungie famous, the game looks great, which, I will admit, is helped by the Xbox's capabilities, but you have to give credit to the artists.
I have never bought a Sony game system, and probably never will, unless it has the greatest games and best performance. So, for now, Xbox 2 looks like it will be my next system.

Same here. I bought and Xbox for Halo and I would have done the same if Halo was on PS2. But then again, if it was on PS2 it would have been nowhere near as spectacular as Halo today. I guess we'll never know...

ive never liked ps2 in the slightest, i cant use the controllers and have never played a good game on it that isnt on another console. bungie is the best: anything they choose to do is the right option in my opinion because they seem to think and test then think a bit more and so produce games that make you think and have great plots. I bought an xbox because of halo even though it was out on pc and i had a kickass pc (hasn't been upgraded since then). I am looking forward to halo2 so much that i log on to HBO everyday and have a timer on the desktop counting down til 11/11.

I hate PS2 controllers, they're made for midgets with shrunken hand syndrome lmao

Anyway, I didn't really start learning about Halo until Xbox launched, I was a Dreamcast guy back then and after the system died I decided to go to Xbox. Then I read EGM magazine and I read their review of Halo (perfect 10s) so I figured if I was gonna buy a launch game for Xbox it'd better be Halo. And I'm glad I did, still one of the best games I got in my collection of Xbox titles, and definitely worthy of Game of the Year.

And that's the story of how I became a Bungie fan and once Halo 2 comes out I'll be even more of a Bungie fan, cuz Halo 2 is gonna be even better than the original :)

Ya ps2 is horrible its easily the worst console. (yes i think gamecube is better) I have said this before but i hate the kid down the street from me. He hates halo and loves ps2. Very bad combination. Actually i think hes gonna get a suprise the next time i see him. lol. (o ya and the ps2 controllers are for litle kids that spend a year mastering the controller and saying how can you play with those xbox or gamecube controllers!! game cube controllers win against the xbox s controllers just by a tin bit. and the xbox controllers are way better then ps2. Alright i think this post is getting to long nones gonna read it.............................................

Luckily Microsoft bought Bungie, otherwise Halo would not have beed so great as it is now!

  • 10.03.2004 4:05 AM PDT

This is true except for one thing... What you saw for the trailer for halo on the ps2 was probably a unrefined version of it, I say this because altough the ps2 graphics aren't nearly as good as xbox the graphics aren't horrible. Coughgamecubecough.

Xbox>PS2>Game cube. I have both and the controllers are about the same, neither of them hurt my hands.
ps the ps2 has way better games than game cube

Now, I am trying to post relevance to this topic, but as others have issued their opinions of the system controllers, I will express mine.

First, I own a gamecube and an Xbox, but have also played the PS2, and there are a few things I dislike about its controllers.
PS2 controller

By looking at the above picture, you'll notice that, when your hands are on each side of the controller, you must reach in with your thumbs to use the two joy sticks. Now, I know some who don't mind this, but I do. It makes using the controller very clumsy. Of course, this is just my opinion.

The Xbox controller S. A very good controller, just like the originals, which I personally don't mind. Now, notice the difference in this screen shot:

Xbox Controller S

The dual joy sticks are not in the middle of the controller, but right when the hand will be, naturally, especially the left stick. Plus, the start buttons and back buttons are not in the middle of the controller, but under the control pad. Makes it easy to reach. Also, the A, B,X and Y buttons are above and to the right of the right stick, making them easy to reach.

And I agree, the gamecube controllers are great also, probably a dead tie with the Xbox controllers in my opinion.

To post relevant to this discussion:

I am also glad that Halo was made for Xbox as well, and it seems suited for the job, graphics, memory and performance wise. Horay!

But the one thing I could never figure out was why PS2 graphics wise was he worst system. In size it is bigger than the gamecube (length wise at least) so you would think there would be more storage for graphics hardware, memory etc.

All the best,

ben
