Jay acts like she's better than everyone else simply because she's a chick.
I hope she chokes to death.

Private groups allow you to have discussions you can't have on the mains, and they are often moderated in a way that members find more agreeable (i.e. certain things that aren't allowed here are allowed there, but things that are allowed here aren't allowed there). It's easier to keep out trolls who make dozens of alts every time they're banned, and it's easier to forge connections with members because of the smaller community size.

I mean, I like the mains well enough. I like venturing out and seeing opinions and perspectives that private groups generally weed out over time. But were I forced to choose one, I'd choose private groups any day. Curious to see which choice others would make.

The mains are home to everyone whereas groups are often tailored to certain types.

Basically. Therefore lots of activity goes on in the mains compared to groups.
Larger audiences.

Bobcast is paid in MILF blind dates.

I have a phobia to groups.

The mains are for everyone, so you get a larger range of opinions I suppose. Groups are all about having similar interests and fitting in.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

The mains are in my opinion the most important forums as they are directly related to the site

That's true. But sometimes selectivity is a good thing. There are certain kinds of people that make online communities unpleasant, and they can be hard to keep away when entry requirements for a community are fairly open. Groups offer the advantage of screening on a level the mains can't match, which is a pretty significant plus.

Key

I've never found a private group that looked all that interesting and the Septagon basically acts as a PG these days sooooooooooo yeah.

There are plenty of interesting private groups.

You got me!

Though I was much more active on them before I was invited to a good private group.

I'm a college dropout.

I don't see much of a difference between private groups and the mains if you're just looking for topics to discuss.

Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

I am a terrible group member.

If I want to discuss a particular topic and it is allowed/appropriate for this site, I post it here. If I want to discuss something that is not appropriate for this site, I visit and post on a site where it is appropriate.

We should know better, because we are better.

1. Activity. The mains are much more active than the groups. Sapphire is one of the most active groups and it barerly has half a page of recent posts.
2. Population. Everyone is in the mains, not everyone is in a private group. If I create a niche thread in a group, I will most likely get less posts than I would in the mains.

Which means that sometimes, selectivity is a bad thing. Therefore, sometimes I will post on the mains, which answers your question in the title.

Well, private groups still have to abide by the code of conduct and whatnot, it's not like any admin with sense is letting people post nudes and links to illegal sites in their groups. But there's stuff that, while I can understand why it's not allowed on the mains, is still appropriate for people of this age group and demographic to discuss. If you already know and are friendly with people here, wouldn't you enjoy discussing those things with them on this site, even if you have to go to a group to do it?

cars, girls & cake all day everyday

This is like asking why we're simply hitting up the club instead of trying to find some exclusive little house party, where you're probably the only one who's brought booze anyway. :|

A party is a party! I don't care about the trolls and the social problems of the rabble; the main forums are for talking about interesting stuff, not trying to bond or form little cliques with whoever I'm talking to. If any that happens (and it happens every -blam!- time I come back here) then so be it. It's nice to happen, but that's not the primary reason I use the mains and even a lot of my groups (that haven't delved down to me and a few people I've known longer than I've known actual life-friends)

As for keeping the public out of your "circle", I think one will enjoy a community a lot more once they realize what little effect that trolls and bad discussion have on good discussion. It just might render null that desire to want to cut down on who you see every day.

Per Audacia Ad Astra

I like being part of the river rather than a branching stream.
Does the stream lead to a better river? Perhaps.

But I'm comfortable here.

I like shorts. They're comfy and easy to wear.

I can never stay active in groups.

Definitely for the "diversity". It also helps to have the mains around when the groups I'm in are a bit slow.

Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

The only reason that I participate in the group where I am currently a member is because those conversations can not be had anywhere else, and my awareness/participation in those discussions is close to a requirement.

Otherwise, I doubt that I would be in any group at all.

It's just me though. I know of a lot of members that retreat or "grow into" group participation and away from the mains. That's their thing and I am glad that they have the option/ability.

But trolls and bad discussion do affect good discussion - by interrupting and derailing it, for starters.

There is always something to discuss and the main forums are pretty much like a really big private group. Unlike most of the groups on the site there is a lot more activity here than in the groups.
