Jay acts like she's better than everyone else simply because she's a chick.
I hope she chokes to death.

There is always something to discuss and the main forums are pretty much like a really big private group. Unlike most of the groups on the site there is a lot more activity here than in the groups.
Not to toot Harlow's horn for him or anything, but the third most active forum on this whole site is a private group. Possibly second-most by now, actually. Should overtake the Septagon in terms of total posts pretty soon, too.

And besides, I don't think the increased activity of, say, the Flood is always a point in its favour, given that the same thread can be made five times in one day when enough people decide to jump on a popular topic. Signal-to-noise ratio isn't great.

I still participate in the mains (obviously!), I'm just very aware of their shortcomings, and I do it in the knowledge that in terms of quality forums, there are better places on this site to go.

To a small extent, yeah. But think about this; what good is trying to piss everyone off when everyone is ignoring you? Admittedly I sort of feel bad for the Flood because they absolutely fail at ignoring the ugly stuff, as does most everyone on the website. But in the (more often occurring as of recent) event they actually can ignore the ugly stuff, it's wonderful.

As for keeping the public out of your "circle", I think one will enjoy a community a lot more once they realize what little effect that trolls and bad discussion have on good discussion. It just might render null that desire to want to cut down on who you see every day.
But trolls and bad discussion do affect good discussion - by interrupting and derailing it, for starters.

Ugh. Here we go...

I hope you're not trying to imply that that group counts for "most" of the 7th Column... (as Dr Weird politely put it)

The fact that the Flood is incapable of ignoring trolls is one of the reasons why they're not allowed to discuss politics and religion there, isn't it?

It is, but if you've ever went through any of the recent political or religious threads that garner lots of attention (before they're locked, of course) there is a lot of meaningful content, before those "meaningful posters" get drowned out/ignored/cursed at for being right/etc.

Point is, no matter how you look at it the Flood has always had a degree of good content, it just takes sifting through all of the crap to get to it. (I think that's the point anyway, I'm too buzzed to want to read through my posts)

Um, what?

No, I was saying that the third most active forum on the site is a private group, and that in terms of posts, it's only a little bit behind the Septagon despite having only been around for about three years.

I didn't even mention names, no need to get mad. :P

So your point is that...because only one private group has ever reached that level of activity, it doesn't count?

It's ok Jay, you don't have to hide behind all of these pointless threads you make.

Here, I'll even say it for you.

Sapphire is the best, joinitjoinitjoinitjoinitjoinitjoinit.

I can't wait for you guys to go off-site so I don't have to read these threads anymore.

Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

I guess that I have the same problem with private groups that Mr. Marx had. "I wouldn't want to associate with any group that would have me as a member."

The difficulty/risk that I see (or perceive) with a closed group (where membership is managed) runs the risk of becoming an echo-chamber of people reinforcing each other until the jerking in a circle becomes self-perpetuating.

No, I'm saying that there are plenty of steadily active groups here that are less active than the main forums, and holding one group's activity compared to the main forums does not mean that most (as Dr Weird politely put it) of the groups here share that same level of activity.

Which is exactly what her original point was, so I'm not sure what you're trying to argue.

I do think you're forgetting that none of the mains (or for that matter private groups) are nearly as active as they once were. All of the game forums on the site have completely died. The Classifieds are as useless as ever. The Flood and the Septagon are solid and the Universe has posts here and there, but there is as much going on in private groups (as a whole) these days as there is on the few main forums that are still even posted in.

Maybe for an open community, but I have a general unease over inherently closed ones.

Either that or I am too lazy to navigate into more than a few forums.

Or, I simply like (despite the obvious drawbacks) of an open forum. For example, once Optimatch became "XBL Gold only" and managed as a form of input into MM decisions, I never visited. I had nothing to contribute or anything that I was curious to take from the forum.

I can't explain it. But for me, I see this community as a whole, and prefer to take it on as such, not in smaller, more palatable bites.

For the record, I would tap that like like it was put-put golf. Like a college student opening a beer keg. Like a phone in the cold war. Like an oil company in a nature reserve. Like a goddamn telegraph.

You make a very poingnant point here, and this is certainly a pitfall of many groups, but on the other hand, in the forums where moderation is limited to...well, the mods, it's much harder to form a bond of trust and companionship between other members because of all the detrimental posters churning out alts when they get banned. So you end up walking the knife edge between not enough familiarity and too much familiarity. I think that's why some of the forums actually do feel like they've come out pretty well, the Community Forum seems generally familiar with many of its members, but the larger more active forums like the flood are the metaphorical Rome, burning in the background. Whereas for groups, some turn out rather well, with a steady enough stream of new members to keep things feeling somewhat fresh, but where a lot of them stagnate into self-righteous older members who scorn and shun new members. In this regard I feel no group has been completely successful in preventing that, but the ones that come close are shining gems for users who actually want to know who they're talking to.

Plenty of big private groups are essentially open and use member queues to weed out alts. You get the same members, just with more accountability because they can't switch names when they get banned.

Doesn't that preserve the spirit of having an open forum but get rid of some of the problems?

Sapphire != the norm among private groups and therefore if you don't like the Sapphire community, you can't participate in this outlier in PG activity, making your counterpoint to Mr. Weird, Ph.D. null and void.
