Subject: Why are stop sign lines always so far from the intersection?

Way back when (maybe a year ago)when I was taking drivers ed my teacher told me you had to stop behind the stop line and look both ways.

Sounds perfectly logical and reasonable right?

Well I always find that the line is several feet before the actual intersection and that my line of sight is extremely limited.

I try to look left and right but its always blocked by buildings and trees and whatever and I can't see oncoming cars.

Anyone else have this little pet peave?

I mean wouldn't it make sense to put the lines closer to the intersections?

If your line of sight is blocked you creep into the intersection to get a better view before taking off.

The lines are behind any sidewalk crossings across the intersection, which there usually is.

Maybe because bigger trucks stick out in the front more than cars.

That's right. I just dropped some AOL IM protocol.

It's because of the turning radius of big trucks. They needs they space.

To make sure pedestrians can walk without being forced into traffic.

I've got a fan!

You're supposed to stop at the line and then inch out to get a better view. It's to ensure you don't go barreling into the pedestrian walkway.

They seem to right distance away in my city. Heck, my entire state for that matter. I think your perception is off. You're probably that guy who's in the middle of the intersection.
