Sixteen-year-olds are irresponsible. Incredibly irresponsible. I wouldn't trust them with a secret, let alone the responsibility of responsibly drinking alcohol.

Eighteen should be the drinking age, but only if you have a high school diploma or GED. When you get your diploma, you get it noted on your driver's license. If you drop out of high school and don't plan on going back, you don't get to drink until 21. At the age of twenty-one, the mark is no longer used so as to not have a mark of the person's education on their license for their whole life.

This system would be used so that nobody could legally drink while they were in high school, as I think that's not appropriate. It's the highest level of the most basic amount of education one should have, and to -blam!- it up by regularly drinking alcohol is stupid.

That idea is ridiculously elitist and discriminatory. As for the "drinking in high school is bad", how is drinking on a Friday night, being hungover on Saturday, and doing homework on Sunday detrimental to a high school experience?
No it's not. High schoolers will still drink. All the time. But it's the principle of the thing. It's not discriminatory. It is your decision to drop out of high school and your fault if you don't graduate. But implying that the situation you suggested would be exactly the way it would happen is idiotic.

As you said, it's their fault if they don't graduate. And the punishments are simple: you don't get to go to a good college, so you get a worse job. Punishing them more isn't necessary.

I love how everyone says "this idea sucks" without explaining why.

Untill you get to the age of 21, your brain grows. when you drink before 21, the damage is worse.

I live in the Netherlands, and since today, drinking went from 16 to 18. I couldn't care less actually, because it's smart not to drink and smoke. I'd say make it illegal but that's just me, because alcohol is just another drug.

It isn't punishment. It's not letting them do something they already can't do. It's rewarding people who did graduate high school.

How is it not smart to smoke?

Why can't there be another?

  • 01.01.2013 2:22 AM PDT

Because you're not fully developed at the age of 16 is why it's 21. In Canada its 18 go drink there when you're old enough.

Why can't there be another?

The people who are graduating high school just to obtain the advantage of getting drunk sooner, aren't the kind of people who should be graduating high school.

Those kinds of people are going to drink illegally anyway.

After seeing the title, I don't think OP should be allowed to drink. EVER!

Im pretty sure OP is trying to troll but in all seriousness 18-21 is just fine. Kids are stupid.

OP is 16 and is upset because he either:

A) Got caught drinking during New Years.
B) Can't drink at all and is butt hurt about it.

Get off your high horse. Neither of those could be true. Assumptions like these is one of the reasons why the Flood can't have a mature discussion.

But OP admitted they were true...

The fact that you put drunking age instead of drinking age shows you are not mature enough to drink.

>implying maturity is tethered to age.

I was mature enough to drink roughly around 17 and a half.
Sadly the fact that I had become adult enough and responsible enough to do it did not make it legal.

>implying maturity is tethered to age.
While it is true that maturity=/=age, most 16 year old's are irresponsible and immature, very few act pass their age and have a level of maturity that rivals that of a fully functional adult member of society.

deej pls

I don't think it would be a good idea to let people get drunk at the same age they learn to drive.

Also, it damages a developing body to drink. Everyone is developed at 21, but only few are at 16.

Country: United States.
State: Pennsylvania.
County: Warren.
I graduated from high school on June-11-2011. I'm 19 right now. I'm turning 20 in December. I like playing video games, and board games. I like reading Sci-Fi, and World War II novels, and what not.

"There is nothing better in the world than being better at a video game than someone else....oh wait"

I would rather it not be the age you can start driving at. To me it should be 18 because you are considered an adult at that age.

  • 01.01.2013 4:11 AM PDT

It wouldn't matter. Even if it stays at the same age limit it is now, people will still get it underage.

  • 01.01.2013 4:14 AM PDT

A competitive players main goal is to win.
A casuals main goal is to have fun regardless of whether that results in a win or loss.
It has nothing to do with individual skill or knowledge, it has to do with the reason you play.

Well, I did drink more often when I was underage than after I turned 18.
