Unless by good person you mean good at sucking dick and kissing ass, you're not getting anywhere in life without at least grades and sobriety.

^This

For the most part, you NEED a degree to be successful in todays world.

Also sobriety is good no matter what the situation. Live above the influence.

The "influence", right. People make out drugs to be much worse than they actually are.

And I've lived in an area where people are killed over drugs everyday.

IMO, the media doesnt make a big enough deal about how dangerous drugs and the drug culture really is

You know how many people have died from weed? Zero.

You know how many people have died from drinking alcohol responsibly? Very few.

it's just me against the world

For me, two of those matter.

Grades:
-need a good GPA to be the doctor I want to be.

Sobriety:
-For my case it's just simple logic. If your doctor told you that you need to stop smoking. Then when you leave his office, and you see him take a smoke break. Will you listen to him? Probably not.

Abstinence:
-Don't really need it.

$.50 in store credit.

Most druggies/alcoholics i know have this complex that they're better than everyone else because they're able to avoid conformity. They turn out to be total asshats.

Most 4.0, hard working students i know habe a huge ego, feel the need to let everybody know how great they are, and get upset when people dont acknowledge their greatness. They also turn out to be total asshats.

The difference, from what ive seen at least, is that the people with the good grades not only have something to be proud of and stay out of trouble with the law, but theyre far more likely do move on and do things with their life. Most of the druggies either continue to live with their parents in this small town, or get a small apartment with several other druggy friends. A few go to the local community college, mostly dropping out before getting any sort of degree, and occasionally they'll get jobs at small bars, restaurants, and gas stations, and often times get fired rather quickly.

I completely agree with the OP that you should be a good person. But you seem to be saying that people who do poorly in school, drink, and do drugs are usually nicer people, which isn't always true, and it's certainly not true that they do more with their lives.

Now i'm not saying all people that do drugs or drink excessively are bad. I've got plenty of friends that do. And i'm not saying that doing drugs and drinking means your going to be a failure. People constantly point out things like how Presidents used to smoke, or all the famous actors and musicians seem to be involved with heavy drug and alcohol use. The difference that people dont seem to get is that the people that go on to be president were likely near the top of their class, hard working, and involved. They dont get that most musicians and actors began working hard at their dream career even before they got out of highschool. A hard working person that smokes is still a hard working person, and a lazy bum that smokes is still a lazy bum.

Slightly off topic maybe, but basically no. Grades and effort do matter. To many people sobriety and abstinence do matter. And their is no connection to either side making you a good or bad person.
