Subject: So I beat Halo: CE.

Your average nice guy on The Flood.... D: ..... WAIT A MINUTE....

Am I the only person who actually liked the last 3 levels being previous ones (even then, Keyes had some new areas, as did The Maw)? It was like going back to an old, familiar place but with things radically different and unsettling because of the Flood and Sentinels and stuff being backwards.

I'm with you there.

Yeah, it was cool seeing how things went to hell after the flood were released. By the time you got to The Maw, you could really feel the urgency, and the sense that everything was falling apart.

Problem with my opinion there is that I never really played much of CE back in the day, just Truth and Reccy co-op with my sister. So said opinion might be influenced by everyone else saying how glorious the game was and the knowledge of what happened.

It's still a valid opinion and evidently shared by at least someone. :P

Really, Halo CE isn't quite the epitome of Halo that most people seem to think. Nostalgia glasses off, I think CE is the weakest Halo storywise.

I recently played through H:CE again for about the millionth time. It is still just as good as it always was, even though it is 11 years old.

It seems like you are complaining because it doesn't hold your hand throughout the game? Yes Camo elites are sneaky, because they are -blam!- invisible!

Checkpoints take you back too far? Well no -blam!-, it is a punishment for dying. Modern games seem to be forgetting this aspect with increasing impudence. Also I don't buy your "checkpoints don't register" rubbish. I have played through this game probably about 100 times more than you and have never encountered this problem.

Yes H:CE has some flaws, but to say that it isn't great must mean that you grew up in the current gaming generation where every game is determined to hold your hand throughout.
Looks like I've hurt someone's feelings.

I don't have a problem with the camo Elites so much as I have a problem with the checkpoints.

Maybe you like being taken back and having to repeat the same thing again after something so unavoidable happens (like a Flood with a rocket launcher shooting at you when you're occupied with 5 other Flood combat forms), but I don't. It kills the fun when you have to repeat something over and over because of one tiny little mishap.

Yes, the checkpoints wouldn't register. I would often find myself dying and then going WAY back and hitting a checkpoint midway from the point I died. Buy that.

Oh, and Halo: CE is a good game - but nowhere near as good as what a lot of people make it out to be.

Agreed. Big time.

It was the start. every console shooter learned from halo.

Halo was the foundation that is the success of FPS.

Other shooters are great for their own reasons, Halo just kinda opened the door for them.

No doom and wolfenstein did that. Halo was only the foundation of console fps.
Gee you don't say?

Shall we ignore Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, then?

To be fair, I don't think either of those were as good as Halo.

I don't know how it held up back then, but I played the CEA version, and IMO it doesn't hold up to today's games, so I'm suprised people are regarding it as the best.

Golden eye was indeed a good game, but it did not cause the same launch that halo did. Nintendo did not push shooters like it did platformers.

For good reason; Banjo-Kazooie is one of the finest 3D platformers ever made.

the repetitive area design with levels really became a bore and really fleshed out how long and tiring some of the levels were, etc.

What did you think about Halo: CE?

Exactly.
CE's MP is fun but the campaign is boring.

The reason why it doesn't live up to your expectations is because you don't understand the progression of games. Back then, this was one of the best 3D shooters on the market. Most games couldn't even scratch the success of Halo CE.

But I do understand some of your points. Rocket flood+Legendary=Raaaagee!

Late to the party would be justifiable since the game's been out so long, but this game definitely isn't as great as people make it out to be.
It was [BLAM!!!] awesome back in 2002, but I agree - it's a decade out of date.
Feel the same way about Halo 2 (the game that introduced me to Halo), haven't played it in a while - I'm a bit afraid that if I go back I'll be a bit disappointed.

The one thing Halo 2 has that no other Halo has, is explorability. The missions are massive, but not too massive, and filled to the brim with easter eggs.

I played Halo 2 for 5 years, as I had nothing else to play... I still go back and play it, especially if I want to explore.

CE was alright, wasn't a massive fan of how freaking long the missions were on some levels, but it also had some pretty spectacular levels that I would play again in a heartbeat.

I never got to play banjo kazooie, or legend of zelda when I was young...

The only 3d platformer I played was Super Mario 64, which remains my favourite... Oops, and Crash Bandicoot, that was an awesome game.

I know I'm different when I say that I actually liked 343 GS and The Library.

Maroon 5 is awesome. Deal with it.

Tedious and Recycled Campaign. Pretty much a Palindrome campaign.

Insanely Fun multiplayer with 7 of your buddies.

Still, the pistol and the hunting rifle were some of the best things to use in that game.

  • 01.01.2013 5:42 AM PDT

Games I like:,
Half-Minute Hero
MBU
Portal
Halo 3 is the best Halo ever
Maps I like: Turf, Avalanche, Pylon, Sandbox, Breakpoint and many more.

I only liked The Maw, it was just pure fun playing that. It also looks awesome in CEA, as did PoA :D

You are elev- oh wait, twelve years late.

You cannot compare things today to a game from back then.

Your 'beliefs' mean less than dick to me.

It's the best Halo campaign, if only because it actually lets you play the way you want to play.

:)
The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

You didnt play it back in good old days so you have no idea. Even today some of its mechanics remain the best compared to its sequels.

  • 01.01.2013 6:00 AM PDT

Antel, or Concortion. Either way, I'd like to think I'm a nice guy who is nice to people.

I will admit that I am extremely bias towards CE, and I honestly thought it was, and still is an enjoyable and above-average game.

You have to remember though, at the time of its' release, CE was one of the best, if not the best FPS game on the console market. Nothing could compare to the success and critical acclaim that CE had, back in '01; and with the problems you've been having, I really have no idea how those things are happening. I've been playing CE for over a decade now, and from the top of my head I've never had any of those problems.

I really don't see what was so great about it, to be honest. Maybe it would have been a lot more fun had I played it when I was younger - but it really wasn't as great as I thought it would be. (It was also the only Halo game I hadn't played yet.)
HERESY!!!!

Magnum and shotgun were awesome to use,
You're using the wrong guns. The Covie weapons are easily the most versatile in any Halo game:

Plasma pistol overcharge useful for stunning or finishing off unshielded enemies
Plasma rifle has stun
Needler is absolute destruction without being overpowered or noobish (like the Halo 4 Needler)

Posted by: Bradleigh
but hot damn - those vehicles were a pain in the ass to even bother with.
So you didn't notice your chain gunner raising his hand whenever you made huge jumps? Or how the vehicles had your marine's health on the HUD? Or how the bouncy physics made the Hog and Ghost stable compared to now (flipping Hog, Ghost coming to a halt when colliding with wall)?

Who actually enjoys the Ghost run on Forerunner?! It's hideous! I've just spent the last 3 hours looking for ways out of the map. The Ghost sucks. Inferior traction to the H2 Ghost. And the worst part is that the checkpoints are few and cannot be delayed.

Posted by: Bradleigh
Not to mention that sometimes when some sneaky little camo Elite -blam!-gle with a sword pops out of nowhere and slices my spine, it would sometimes take me as far back as 5-8 minutes from that particular point because the checkpoints don't always register.
Which one? I only recall 3 situations where you might encounter that enemy.

And FYI, the checkpoint system in this game is glorious. Besides getting stuck in an infinite loop (Halo 2 didn't fix it, it merely addressed it by providing a workaround), the checkpoints are extremely useful. You can delay them with Banshee fire and grenades. Halo 4 only implemented the former. There are timed checkpoints. Halo 3 has very few of these, Reach brought back a bunch of them, and Halo 4 has none of it.

Posted by: Bradleigh
Scorpion projectile splash damage was pretty much -blam!- nonexistent,

the repetitive area design with levels really became a bore and really fleshed out how long and tiring some of the levels were, etc.
Like that really matters. It's already powerful enough.

The encounters, pay attention to the encounters!

What did you think about Halo: CE?
I think it's core, I think it's pure, I think it has replayability.
