It's the best Halo campaign, if only because it actually lets you play the way you want to play.

You didnt play it back in good old days so you have no idea. Even today some of its mechanics remain the best compared to its sequels.

Some? Try almost all.

Yes, the checkpoints wouldn't register. I would often find myself dying and then going WAY back and hitting a checkpoint midway from the point I died. Buy that.
Pro-tip: in CE, Reach, H4, and possibly H5 and H6, be sure to delay checkpoints that come right before a tough fight.

Of course, not all checkpoints can be delayed but the ones that can are immensely advantageous if taken at the right time.

Delaying methods:

-nearby enemy
-jumping
-meleeing (H2, H4)
-throwing grenades (CE)
-Banshee fire (CE, H2, H4)
-Ghost fire (H2, H4)
-low shield (H2)

Example:

The fights on Infinity leading up to the holdout are extremely easy if you utilize the checkpoints properly.

Delaying checkpoint = less repetetion

Halo CE wasn't a perfect game but it was amazing to play when it came out because there was not much that could match it back in the day. The reason people love Halo CE is because of nostalgia and the Pistol was overpowered

No, the reason people love Halo CE is because it's the only Halo game that truly got it right.

Shove the nostalgia and overpowered bull-blam!- up your ass.

Of course Halo: CE got it right, it was the first Halo game after all.

It's awesome if it's your first Halo game, even better if it's your first FPS.

I hate MLP. It is cancerous and pretty stupid to see men watching a show for girls. They can deny the truth but the truth shall prevail!

"I will not fail even if I must sacrifice my life." - Siegfried

In all honestly, I don't think Halo: CE was great at all. I bought the Halo: CEA and I thought the vehicles were annoying to drive and the campaign did not seem all that fun.

Well considering your plsying a game with 11 year old mechanics, then rating it on it's gameplay by todays standards, of course you're going to think it's bad!

This is now my main account. My former account was xKingGhidorahx. I've been on this site since 2009.

The game is over 11 years old. If you'd have played it when it released or just in that time period then your opinion would probably be a-lot different.

Am I the only person who actually liked the last 3 levels being previous ones (even then, Keyes had some new areas, as did The Maw)? It was like going back to an old, familiar place but with things radically different and unsettling because of the Flood and Sentinels and stuff being backwards.

I feel the same way.

Name's John. I'm a 21-year-old firefighter/EMT from lolhio who doubles as a die-hard Halo fan. I've been enjoying the franchise since 2001. My favorite iteration of Halo would have to be Halo 2 simply because I never got to experience the joy of a full-on Halo: CE LAN.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

Oh yeah, and boot Zome.

My opinions of CE are considerably favorable since I played it when the technology was relatively good for the time period.

That's because you're twelve years late to the party.

Stop arguing over imaginary -blam!-. May as well argue over Santa Claus. There will never be proof that there is/was a god - and before people start saying "HERP DERP PROVE THERE WASN'T ONE ROFLOLOL" well, you are the people who made it up in the first place so we know there isn't one
What created the big bang then? A coalition of genetically modified TR-909s with extra distortion?

OP has a tough time playing the game on normal...The CE tank doesn't have splash damage apparently...OP says the checkpoint system isn't fair enough...

All I am reading here is excuses.

BE HUMAN

Fight for Earth. Fight for Humanity.

So you're one of these 'new generation' gamers who expect far far too much from games, and probably slander the 'lack' of features in new games.

This game was the revolution, dude. This literally changed shooters on the console. Were it not for Halo CE, none of your favorite games would exist, and the console would be nothing.

Halo CE, for an ELEVEN YEAR OLD GAME, is massive. I'd daresay the levels are just as big as Halo 3's, just with lower resolution, what with the dated graphics.

The gameplay is remarkably smooth (I find playing this is actually easier and feels more 'modern' then Halo 2)

How could you expect more from a ten year old game?

This new generation are scum.

Agreed. All the changes are good and add variety. Do we really want another Halo 3? Just running around with one gun and no armor abilities? It's good that 343 wants to try something new. Do we really want the same thing for three more games?

Idk. I played it when Reach came out and still had just as much fun with it as I did when I was younger.

I recently played through H:CE again for about the millionth time. It is still just as good as it always was, even though it is 11 years old.

It seems like you are complaining because it doesn't hold your hand throughout the game? Yes Camo elites are sneaky, because they are -blam!- invisible!

Checkpoints take you back too far? Well no -blam!-, it is a punishment for dying. Modern games seem to be forgetting this aspect with increasing impudence. Also I don't buy your "checkpoints don't register" rubbish. I have played through this game probably about 100 times more than you and have never encountered this problem.

Yes H:CE has some flaws, but to say that it isn't great must mean that you grew up in the current gaming generation where every game is determined to hold your hand throughout.

The bar was much lower before. It obviously improved over time but even then Halo set the bar pretty high for game development.

I really don't see what was so great about it, to be honest.
Troll or late to the party or something else suggesting you're an idiot.

Really late to the party, try playing Halo 1 for the first time when youre about seven. It was great.

Don't forget the massive AI & vehicle numbers.

CE can have up to 80 AI and it'll only lag if there's a lot of AI shooting at once not to mention weapons will only disappear when you're looking away.

Whereas Halo 4 deloads AI very quickly and dropped weapons even if they're right in front of you, can disappear.

And of course, CE vehicles feel just right. They don't flip easily and when they are flipped upright, they don't take 10 seconds of spinning in place to do that.

Lastly, a typical CE vehicle collection:

Looks like I've hurt someone's feelings.

I don't have a problem with the camo Elites so much as I have a problem with the checkpoints.

Maybe you like being taken back and having to repeat the same thing again after something so unavoidable happens (like a Flood with a rocket launcher shooting at you when you're occupied with 5 other Flood combat forms), but I don't. It kills the fun when you have to repeat something over and over because of one tiny little mishap.

Yes, the checkpoints wouldn't register. I would often find myself dying and then going WAY back and hitting a checkpoint midway from the point I died. Buy that.

Oh, and Halo: CE is a good game - but nowhere near as good as what a lot of people make it out to be.
When you die, there's supposed to be a penalty. 5 minutes of wasted time isn't that bad when compared to other games. (Don't ever play Dark Souls)

  • 01.01.2013 10:06 AM PDT

I agree. It is overall good but it has some really awful levels, and the better levels are still plagued with repetitive areas and dull parts. Plus the Flood in this game are rubbish enemies.

Rocket Flood are supposed to be like that. Their reckless with that weapon is something that Halo 2 and 3 is missing.

If you're in a Banshee, get out of it or hover and use long range plasma bolts. The Flood can hear your vehicle coming from some distance so of course they'll be shooting you down.

If you're on foot, use ranged weapons (except the sniper rifle)... just about every other weapon in the sandbox can be used at range, even the Shotgun!

You can also try to be creative:

-trap them where they spawn
-get them to kill themselves and their comrades
-unleash a -blam!- sword Zealot on them
