“Strange,” mused the Director, as they turned away, “strange to think that even in Our Ford’s day most games were played without more apparatus than a ball or two and a few sticks and perhaps a bit of netting. imagine the folly of allowing people to play elaborate games which do nothing whatever to increase consumption.”

Isnt becoming less empathetic detrimental to your mental health?

I sure think so
I must confess to being remarkably uninterested in what you think. Say it with scientific reason (and supporting papers), or don't say it at all.

One thing that jumped out at me from this study was that they took a group of non-gamers to do their research. It would be interesting to see if similar effects are reported in gamers, or to take a group of long term gamers and compare to non-gamers.

I'd be more interested in knowing whether it has to be video games or not. Does any kind of exposure to violence do this? Films, life experience, etc.

Of course it does.

Thats why many soldiers come home with PTSD
Then you can't place blame solely on video games that are violent.

LOL... research.

The way I see it unstable people will be unstable, whether they play video games or not.
And said unstable people will be more likely to play violent video games. It seems to me people are getting the cause and the effect the wrong way round here.

Is that me?

So wait, unstable people play video games. Unstable people may* become more unstable. Unstable people do bad things. Video games blamed.

'Stable' people play video games. Stable people are fine.

*Obviously not all "unstable" people will be affected by video games.

^The way I see it.
That's my point. And the fact that unstable people are unstable to begin with would mean violent games would appeal to them for obvious reasons, so when they do unstable things, people see a correlation, mix up the cause and the effect, and blame video games rather than the individual.

I do think it would be beneficial for everyone's mental health if we were a lot nicer as a society. yes.

I dont. And I dont think anyone does entirely (unless they're dumb). However, I do think it contributes a little bit.

Except hes absoutley right. Playing violent video games DO have an effect on us.
Not quite. The study shows that violent video games decrease activity in the parts of the brain associated with empathy and emotional control. That isn't the same as making a person obnoxious or damaging their mental health, as the OP claims.

How the -blam!- does that work? How is lack of empathy unhealthy?

  • 01.01.2013 10:01 AM PDT

So it makes your brain more creative and responsive?

Time to play more

Detrimental effects to social skills and functionality in society, et cetera, et cetera.

  • 01.01.2013 10:03 AM PDT

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

Well then you've just told a bunch of violently unstable people that their favourite pass-time is bad for them and they're mentally deficient.

Good idea or bad idea?

  • 01.01.2013 10:03 AM PDT

Not at all. Not being empathetic doesn't turn you into an anti social weirdo or harm your social skills in the slightest.

Why would the other guy have to go first?

We should all strive to be the best person we can be. Society has given us all so much, we should at least have the common decency to act civil to one another.

Except hes absolute right. Playing violent video games DO have an effect on us.

Because there's no such thing as violent music, books, comics and films. Let's not forget your family and the area you live in has no impact at all on you. So if you have a single dad that is a gangbanger and you live in a violent gang controlled area. It's not going to have any impact at all on you.

All of those have an impact on you as well. Everything you do/see has an impact on you.
