I know you are but what am I?

Does the word choice really matter? Less is different.

Stop nitpicking things.

Well, my point was to show that, even though you say the study's findings don't matter, there is evidence to suggest that violent videogames lead to less empathy and emotional control.

Being less empathetic doesn't affect your logic. Doesn't mean you lose self-control and the idea of what is right and wrong.

Please do not send me group invites.

Is this that same study that observed a bunch of kids from Singapore or something?

Allons-y!

I'm one of the nicest people you'll ever meet, and I've been playing violent games since I was two.. Ah, Wolfenstein..

  • 01.02.2013 1:37 AM PDT

no

  • 01.02.2013 1:38 AM PDT

No. It depends on the person, not the game itself. Are you saying that violent games are capable of corrupting everyone?

A study by Marina Krcmar and Kenneth Lachlan (2009) shows that all increased aggression by gamers who play violent video games dissipates to near normal levels after approximately 15 minutes.

A study by Wolgang Bosche (2010) shows that while increased negative behavior is increased while playing some video games, the positive behaviors are increased by an even greater amount.

...for those that are actually interested.

Welcome.
You have just entered my mind. Please sign the contract before continuing further into this black hole to acknowledge I am not at fault if any mental/physical damage is caused to you whilst viewing my history. If any damage to yourself is caused, please call your whaambulance for advice.

I've actually played Grand Theft Auto from a young age yet I'm not aggressive and such. I think it may be down to personality or that i'm just weird.

Playing violent video games such as Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty, Halo, Mass Effect, and Skyrim (just to name a few) change your behavior and make you an aggressive, obnoxious person!

Seems legit.
Try something original next time if you want to troll.
People like you are what is wrong with the internet.

GOAT

About time people start realizing this.

Video games destroy your empathy, which is bad for our social skills.

Precisely.

The phrase "studies show" has become a sort of religious mantra these days. Oh, "studies show" this and that, therefore it must be true!

We forget that studies are designed and framed by men and can easily e skewed. For example, they can be constructed in such a way as to only look for negative aspects of an issue, as with government-funded research on marijuana that often expressly ignores positive aspects of the use of the drug under the premise that this data does not contribute to the stated "research goal" of finding things wrong with marijuana.

It can all get quite political. A lot depends on who funds the research. They get to dictate parameters and boundaries.

Wow, it's almost like people calm down after doing aggressive things in a video game!

(no really thanks for this I was getting tired of a thread full of fear-mongering OMG VIDEO GAMES HAVE A LASTING NEGATIVE EFFECT)

I'd be more interested in knowing whether it has to be video games or not. Does any kind of exposure to violence do this? Films, life experience, etc.

Of course it does.

Thats why many soldiers come home with PTSD

Perhaps the experience doesn't neccessarily mean it has to be traumatic for effects of PTSD to take place... maybe what the issue in fact is, is over exposure to certain parts of brain of stimulus, playing video games does provide that.

I doubt it has anything to do with what is being depicted on the screen as opposed to the screen itself... all were doing in shooters is essentially just us playing 'tag' with each other.

A real test of a man is if he is willing to scrape a sharpened razor up and down his junk just to please a woman.

I want to see a study on how -blam!- reality TV and listening to -blam!-s on the radio affect brains as well.

  • 01.02.2013 5:33 AM PDT

You look around. You fire your weapon before you realize.
Its just me. I fall and you walk up. You cry why.
When i pop up. You look at me in wonder. I say,"ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL."
You bend to my will and go to a cliff, walk off, and fall.
The last thing you hear is me stating as fact,"All will fail the battle of life, you just went early"

I'm just laughing, because the whole arguement is pointless. The only people affected in any significant amount by violent video games are a very small minority, so it matters little if violent video games cause any change to our minds.

The fact still stands that pre-existing mental health is the real issue.

I was about to point out as a Devil's Advocate that there are a bunch of little bastards over mics on XBL, then I realized that barely anyone uses mics.

Hmmm.

Ugh this doesnt show much beyond the concept that images of violence or simulated activities reduce responses to violent activity, in no way does this show that gamers are more violent when exposed to violent video games.

Also Dr Yang Wang, lol.

People can be jerks over XBL, but it's all talk.

You would be surprised at how many "hacker" threats I've gotten, but I've never been hacked before. On XBL at least...

And I want to clarify that by "significant amount", I meant violent enough to hurt or even kill someone.

And by "small minority", I mean so small that it is hard to tell if it is even there.

Recon Number 54 -
If they are still looking, then while holding the snarl, I let drool start to drip from my mouth, I stand, curl my fingers into claws and with a hunched over crouch, I then make slow and deliberate steps towards them. When I get close enough, I let them hear my agonized and gasping growls and then, if they continue to stare, when I get within arm's reach? I kiss them on the nose, and run away giggling.

If violent video games truly caused people to be violent then consider the number of people who play violent games and don't go around killing people.

Millions of people bought CoD and Halo and Battlefield and yet, I don't see millions of spree killers and sociopaths only a few each year.

It seems these researchers are either being funded by biased supporters and are giving the results they want or they genuinely cannot do basic Maths or Statistics...

"Find where the liar hides, so that I may place my boot between his gums!" - Rtas 'Vadum

It's hardly solid evidence. They should probably have a group who played non-violent video games to see if it is a sole product of "violence" and nothing else to do with virtual interactive media in general. They also don't state how large the deviation in brain activity is from the norm. It may not even be significant enough to produce noticeable effects on behaviour. It was also supported by these guys, so I'm wary at best about these findings.
