I've got a fan!

Put down the donuts and get your ass in the gym/track for 5-6 hours a week (weightlifting + cardio). There ya go.

Studies show that men think about sex every 7 seconds. I do my best to eat hotdogs in under 6, just so things don't get weird.

But I need to gain more weight.
That's where you have to talk to someone at a gym, and maybe GNC. You don't want to put on fat, so muscle weight is more difficult.

Same as losing weight, start at your doctor. She or he will put you in touch with therapists who can help.

I'd have to disagree there charlie. Most doctors are not very knowledgable about weight training. Professional athletic trainers are a much better source of information.

That's why I said they will refer you to a specialist. True, the family internist doesn't know about bulking up, but they DO know about the physical trainer who is in network and covered by your health insurance.

I'm not sure if a doctor visit is going to help me, but I'm planning going to the gym regularly in the near future.

Generalizations.
Helping idiots hate other idiots since people have existed.

Some weight loss enthusiasts recommend low-carb, high protein diets to lose weight. While these are usually effective to help lose weight, it's important to do it in moderation.

The average person consumes 250 grams of carbohydrates a day.
When you consume less than 100g of carbs a day, your body goes into a metabolic state called ketosis, where it burns fat for primary energy instead of carbs. The result is weight loss. However, this method has health risks. When you consume near-zero carbohydrates, you put your kidneys under serious strain. So much strain, in fact, that your kidneys can start to fail.

This actually happened to my dad. He was trying a 0 carb diet to lose weight. His kidney function dipped dangerously low and he developed kidney disease. He had to be hospitalized, and the doctors blamed his diet. He's fine now.

So in short, very low carb diets are very bad for your kidneys. Don't do them.

This is exactly why I said to not do fad diets. Most people in that industry have no clue what they are doing. Just think about this:

Your body is a machine. It has evolved over hundred of thousands of years on certain foods. That mix is the ideal plan. We didn't evolve eating only meat, nor only grain. There is a balance, that balance is what is best for you.

Again, talk to your doctor. If they shrug, ask to be referred to a nutritionist.

Most doctors are not very knowledgable about weight training.

Well, that entirely depends on the doctors specialty. Of course a heart surgeon would be clueless, but many doctors are very knowledgeable about muscles and how to healthily build them.

Then obviously this isn't the thread for you. I had hoped the title would show who its for...

Anyways, like I told someone else, your doctor is the single best place to start. Ask to be referred to a nutritionist and a physical therapist. Many times they will be covered by your insurance. (this is under the assumption you are in the USA. If you aren't then disregard. Talk to someone local about it)

Well, that entirely depends on the doctors specialty. Of course a neurologist would be clueless, but many doctors are very knowledgeable about muscles and how to healthily build them.

I'd argue that a neurologist has a better grasp of what is good for the human body and what isn't than most kinesiology majors and private trainers. They may not be able to formulate a workout plan, but they're still very good resources.

Step two: Start running

Step three: You are now in shape

Step one: Don't get fat.

Step two: Wait, there is not step two.

it's just me against the world

I once lost needed to lose 10 lbs in one week. All I had to do was go out for a mile long walk once a day and replace my dinner with a bowl of cereal. pretty easy.

  • 01.01.2013 11:32 AM PDT

I am assuming direct control.

Solid advice. I started working to lose weight and right about this time last year I weighed roughly 245 pounds (6'1"). I worked on it and got down to roughly 235 by spring time. I kept on it and started running and exercising a lot more often and now I'm sitting at 215.

Really, the hardest part for me was the mental aspect. I would find excuses to skip a workout, go eat fast food, etc. It helps if you have friends who help you, because it took me a long time to actually start losing weight and really it's only because I leave for the army over the summer. Now that I have a set goal, working out is a lot easier.

I'm going to put this in the OP. Its an important point I missed. Having a support network helps so much.

Try this thread?

Why would you go into a thread about losing weight to ask about gaining it?

Army? What's with the Navy sticker?

Growing up I had liked the Navy, but once I visited West Point I was sold. I have Navy stickers on my mirror but then I have army flags and pictures up in my room. A total conflict of ideals, I know haha.
