Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.
They are paid the salary that they are able to negotiate and that the owners/franchise is willing to pay. It's the fans who are paying the ticket prices in order to sit in the stands, or the commercial sponsors who pay for advertisement time on the networks who then pay the league in order to televise the sport.
If it weren't for the fans being willing to watch (and accept commercials) or pay for seats, then the teams wouldn't have the money to pay any salaries or ones as high as they are.
IMO, it's a good example of the market setting its own levels.
I don't begrudge someone with a skill, talent or gift who is then able to turn that ability into a moneymaking enterprise. There are only one group of people (IMO) who have any say or right to complain (or do something) if they think that the player salaries are too high. The fans themselves. And all they need to do is not watch, not attend and wait for the results in the paper or on the news that night. If fan participation (ie: money) were to slow down or dry up, salaries would plummet.
