The problem with our society is that people like the OP do not value soldiers and teachers. It's disgusting that those who serve our nation make such meager salaries. We need to support them.

When did I say I didnt value soldiers or teachers?

I just dont value them (economically speaking) as much as pro athletes.

lolnope, do you seriously think teachers get summer off? I bet you also think they stop working after school is over too.

Well my moms a teacher. She gets the summer off.

teachers generally stay until about 4 (an hour 1/2 after school ends) in my experience.
not up here in Canada, They have to prepare the course content themselves over the summer, and they do all their marking during the nights... at least in ONtario they do with these retarded unions.
Just to give you an idea - I never arrive at school later than 7am, and never leave before 5pm. During vacations, I'm usually grading papers or tweaking/creating lesson plans. Over the summer, teachers [including myself] are either taking classes, or teaching summer school classes.

The idea that teachers barely work 8 hours a day and only work 9 months a year is just blatantly false.

They are my far the best in their field. And their are far more doctors in the world than pro athletes. To be a professional athlete takes a lifetime of dedication, natural ability, and hard work. Like you said with the money the nfl, nba, etc make they should be paid millions. Nobody would watch pro sports if it was average people playing them.

  • 01.01.2013 12:21 PM PDT

Yes they are. They deserve to be paid a good amount but not the millions they get.

By the gods what are you doing here, well don't just stand there man make the tea! Make yourself useful and look at my Fileshare.

Economically justified, not so much on a human/moral level. Teachers and soldiers on the other hand are underpaid. You seem to think no value is attached to reduced working hours and playing sports for a living.

  • 01.01.2013 12:22 PM PDT

Generalizations.
Helping idiots hate other idiots since people have existed.

Sports stars are, more or less, putting on a performance. For an audience. And this audience often has millions of viewers. Which is why I think they get paid so much, because there is so much money put into each performance, especially advertising money. The starting salary for Major League baseball is like $330,000 a year.

Now look at, say, Minor League baseball. These games aren't on TV, there is almost no audience in comparison to Major League baseball. And these guys are paid maybe $20,000 a year.

So I think it has to do with the size of the audience. Big audience, big money. Small audience, small money.

Athletes work harder then anyone else besides people in the military. Some athletes are total goons who should be in jail I agree with that, but a lot are great guys.

They work hard and train for...what, though? Athletes are no different than musicians or comedians; they're entertainers.

NON FACET NOBIS CALCITRARE VESTRUM PERNĒ¢UM

They are completely overpaid.

Today, a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream and we are the imagination of our selves.

Lolyes.

No way does a sports star deserve what they are paid. A footballer recently joined PSG for 40mil Euros and will earn 250k a month.

you think 250k a month is a lot? Didier Drogba earns something like 310 thousand a week playing in the Chinese soccer league.

And musicians and comedians also make millions of dollars. Carlos Mencia is worth like 35 million dollars. Hans Zimmer is worth like 90 million dollars.

  • 01.01.2013 12:28 PM PDT

Personally I would say they are paid too much. You get some good sportsman and they deserve to be rewarded for doing well but not that well rewarded.

Challenge me to a Hawaiian Punch chugging contest. I dare you.

$.50 in store credit.

Yes, i think they make more money than they need, but it's only that way because so many people support them and their organizations with so much money. It's not their fault people will pay ridiculous amounts of cash to see them play and you cant hold it against them.

EXTREMELY overpaid. No one should get paid that much. Much less -blam!- athletes.

Why do you feel that way?

Well athletes do bring entertainment to millions of people, however I don't really think that the things most of them do are worthy of millions of dollars. Won't say it's easy to be where they are but their talent is really not all that expensive as people make it out to be.
I don't think that anyone should have millions in their personal pockets. Whoever they are. Even scientists who do things much, much more important than athletes ever will.
ofc... pop stars are even worse in this case... because they don't sell talent, they sell -blam!- to their braindead audience.

It's not that athletes don't deserve their salary, it's that the gap between this and that of teachers and soldiers - who both undergo more training than most professions, is too wide. Athletes should be paid more than soldiers and teachers IMO as the factors such as innate ability to perform and extensive training and hard work required on their part, amounts to more than that of teachers and such but not by the proportion shown by this gap.

So what you're basically wanting is for everyone to make the same amount of money regardless of their job?
