Helping idiots hate other idiots since people have existed.
Sports stars are, more or less, putting on a performance. For an audience. And this audience often has millions of viewers. Which is why I think they get paid so much, because there is so much money put into each performance, especially advertising money. The starting salary for Major League baseball is like $330,000 a year.
Now look at, say, Minor League baseball. These games aren't on TV, there is almost no audience in comparison to Major League baseball. And these guys are paid maybe $20,000 a year.
So I think it has to do with the size of the audience. Big audience, big money. Small audience, small money.
