Of course they do, and it's because American culture places inordinate importance on sports.

Whats wrong with finding sports important?

Some people love video games, some people love music, some people love books. Me? I love sports.

Whats the difference?

Scarcity and skill are not the same thing.

I dont get this whole argument about doctors needing more money. For one ive never met a doctor that doesnt get by very well monetarily, and two if doctors were paid more wouldn't that just result in higher prices and more people unable to receive care?

So what you're basically wanting is for everyone to make the same amount of money regardless of their job?

No, he's saying that you should be paid more based on how "important" or useful your job is. Like being a doctor, scientist , policemen e.t.c would be paid the most and jobs which aren't useful, like an entertainer in some form, would be paid the least.

Thats not how capitalism works.

And who determines who has the more important job in that situation? Whos to say that a football player is less important than a teacher?

Nothing. I did not say there was anything.

Some people love video games, some people love music, some people love books. Me? I love sports.

Whats the difference?
Some pursuits contribute much more to the progression of society than others. Sports is not such a thing.

It's not that sports aren't a good source of physical activity, learning teamwork, etc. But there's some areas [mostly the South] where things like high school and college football rule the entire town. It's very...cult-like.

You can teach alot of people HOW to be a doctor. Hence, there are thousands of doctors in my city alone.

You cant teach the skill it takes to make it to the NFL.

Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

I would wager that anyone who feels that sports stars "are overpaid" doesn't spend much (if any) of their own money supporting, watching or attending that particular sport/team/player.

So, the money that they (the athlete) isn't coming out of their pocket. So, it really shouldn't matter to them.

Just like I don't have anything to say about people who get rich playing music, acting, or working in any field/endeavor where I don't invest a penny of my own money. If they have an audience and that audience is willing to make them rich? Good for them. IMO, the "fools" would be the people who are happily forking over their own money for something I don't consider worth a dime of my money. As long as the fans are happy though, it's not my concern or worry.

If I wanted teachers to make more, I would talk to my school board. If I wanted soldiers to get paid better, I would speak to my representatives. That actually IS my money and I have a say (at least in theory) as to how/where it is spent.

"Progression" is a really phony word. We don't need to progress when we already have the world.

At this point, entertainment > progression.

I'm not saying that they need more money; I think that they get paid fairly. I'm just arguing that their job is more important and more difficult than an athlete's, so they should make more than them.

Sounds like you're describing the lower half of my body, actually.

And there are places like that for music and movies as well. Hollywood? Graceland?

i just dont see the difference. Sports, music, movies are all forms of entertainment. So whys it matter which one importance is placed upon?

In what ways does music further society that sports doesnt?

No. They are a product that we pay for, so as long as we pay for that product, they deserve those salaries. The produt that the athletes provide give millions of jobs to people. Security, concessions, media, etc. Sports are vital to America's economy, and in no way do they deserve less than they are paid.

It's not just Americans. Top soccer leagues pay players like Lionel Messi as much as a starting QB in the NFL. Manchester United is worth almost as much as the Red Sox.

And yes, it's all ridiculous. But the owners are making gobs of money, so why would anyone lower the price of admission or watching it?

Oh, definitely. I dont think anyone would argue that humanity needs sports more than doctors. But i feel, given the current economic situation, raising the pay of doctors would only create more problems.

I didn't say it did, though I would argue that music and other artistic pursuits are generally more important than sports just because art is a more intellectually rigorous process than sports. However, both of those things are far less important than education, civics, philosophy, ethics, and politics.

Lolyes.

No way does a sports star deserve what they are paid. A footballer recently joined PSG for 40mil Euros and will earn 250k a month.

But he brings in more than that for his respective club. So how is he overpaid?
That's why PSG lost money last year. Same as Manchester City.
