And kill all life? Why would they want to kill themselves along with everyone else?

In Halo 3 Truth says "That secret dies with all the rest". That means he knows the rings will kill everyone. What's his goal then? Why would he want to kill himself and everyone?

"Ignorance is a plague."

Close, but the plague killed those infected with it, and the ignorant are still alive.
I wish ignorance was a plague.

The prophets told them that it would send them on the Great Journey.

They probably believe in some grand afterlife of some sort. The Great Journey probably was supposed to take them to some beautiful Forerunner Heaven or something.

"I admit, I need your help. But that secret dies with all the rest"

Refers to the fact that he needed the aid of humans in order for his plan to work. Meaning that humans were the rightful descendants of the Forerunners.

That secret needed to die, or the prophet would be exposed as a phony, and the Covenant would worship the humans.

I am the Carpet man they talk about... I jump from star to star, I walk it out.

The vast majority of the Covenant thinks firing the rings will bring them to some sort of greater existence (essentially heaven).

Truth finds out the... well, truth... but is too stubborn and prideful to admit that he was wrong.

Also, when fired it makes the Covenant gods. That's what they believed happened to the Forerunners.

He says that because only humans had the power to work the most powerful of the Forerunner technology.

Imagine what would've happened had the entire Covenant found out about that.

Respect skill, Not rank.

they believe that the forerunners used the rings to ascend mortal form, and that if they fire the rings, they'll transcend to the same plane as their gods. So, basically, typical religious you'll die and go to heaven thing, just without it being sin to commit suicide, i guess.

I like to play Reach for fun. I hate MLG, campers, armor lock, and team killers because they ruin that fun. Deal with it.

Play Halo 2 campaign.

I am a monument to all your sins

It was supposed to ascend them into godhood.
