Subject: Should psychopaths really go to prison?

Based upon the fine standard of putting a murderer behind bars, I have been thining: Is it really fair to put psychopaths in maximum security prisons?

It is quite clear that it doesn't actually heal their mental state. It seems to just progress it to a more dangerous level.

This world is so determined on equal rights of the individual, yet we do not look at the ones that need help the most. Mentally sick people.

tl;dr Give your best idea of what to do with psychopaths.

Regardless of whether the individual is mentally ill or not, you do the crime, you do the time.

  • 01.01.2013 1:28 PM PDT

No, but they should be kept the -blam!- away from the public.

  • 01.01.2013 1:28 PM PDT

Just remember that no matter how terrible you feel, or how much you want to let go, there are people who care about you and love you.

I'm not familiar with psychopaths and have no idea what they need, therefore I don't feel I could make a decision.

I'll bring the tritium laser cutters if you bring the beer!

Funny story.

Yes. For the same reason that dangerous animals are kept in captivity.

"Hello. My name is Stephen Hawking. Physicist, cosmologist, and something of a dreamer. Although I cannot move, and I have to speak through a computer, in my mind, I am free. Free to explore the universe, and ask the big questions."

I feel like the entire prison system should be focused more around rehabilitation than punishment, personally. So yeah.

They should go somewhere. Letting them wander the streets is not a good idea.

Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

Completely up to the society that has to deal with the issue.

If they consider incarceration, treatment, isolation, or execution to be the most appropriate action (and it is supported by the members of that society) then so be it. But that decision by the society will speak to others as to the values and priorities of the society in question.

For example, the Oslo massacre. He got... was it 20 years? For something like 70 dead? It was the decision of Norway and their culture and I am willing to accept it as reasonable to them.

If they had simply decided to put him down (as one would a mad dog)? I could accept and understand that choice as well.

Either extreme allows me to better understand the values and priorities of the society in question.

Late Edit: corrected a country name.

Yes. For the same reason that dangerous animals are kept in captivity.

But "dangerous" animals are just animals that follow their wired instincts.

We are the ones that conclude that their behaviors are unjustified.

The bungie.net community is the halo PC community that is renowned for being unbelieveably sucky.

Psychopaths can't be fixed with medication like other mental illnesses. Psychopaths feel no empathy. Yes, they should be locked up because they can't be rehabilitated or medicated.

Agreed there are couple of movie's that touch on such subject like having multiple personalities and other stuff.

  • 01.01.2013 1:33 PM PDT

Psychopathy is not a sickness or illness. It's a personality disorder. It's incredibly more complicated than most people give it credit for.

You have to ask yourself, "is it better for this lime to be in the 'coconut' or outside?"

If the lime is outside the coconut, it is liable to have a caustic effect on society, no matter the root cause. If the lime isn't acidic anymore, it isn't a lime, and has no reason to be put in the coconut in the first place.

Untreatable psychopaths belong in coconuts. Er, segregated from the public.

I like shorts. They're comfy and easy to wear.

I don't think psychopaths really exist outisde of TV.

Actually, it is. Insanity pleas are hard to pull off, and they're less of a get-out-of-jail-free card and more of a stay-in-this-hospital-until-we-decide-you-can-leave card.

I am a monument to all your sins

counseling and treatment has been shown to completely ineffective for treating Psychopaths. The bottom line is that they need to be taken off the streets where they can't hurt anybody. It may not be their fault, but psychopaths are inherently evil, or at least amoral people that are a threat to those around them.

I understand the appeal of a relativistic stance on crime and psychology, it ties in nicely with anthropology and respect for cultures unlike one's own. However, with scientific advances being made in neurophysiology, I think a more satisfying result can be achieved; one that addresses intent more holistically.

...what

Psychopaths as cold, calculating criminals only exist in fiction.

In real life, psychopathy encompasses a broad range of symptoms like antisocial behaviour and narcissism and psychologists can't even agree on the fundamentals.

I don't see how that is helping the individual or us understand what happened to prevent it.

I would like you to research your stance more so you understand how much money is wasted in the prison system, how overcrowded they are, and what the common charges are.
