We might as well accept that we'll be aiming down sights and calling in air support by halo 6
How about this, Imagine calling a Longsword to carpet bomb an area full of phantoms or enemies (Campaign only obviously) or ordering a full squad of ODST's or other specialized allies to help you in the battlefield. It could work like some sort of Campaign ordinance drops, but with more strategy.Would have been way better than that lame Halo 4 Target Locator.
It'd also be easier to glitch, so we could have an army of marines being dropped off! :D Even if retained, the Target Locator still doesn't work.
I loved Halo 4. But I felt that the UNSC support for Chief was veeery low, and the typical FPS campaigns of go here and clear this of enemies are getting old and boring. How about spicing it up with some good old fashioned strategy?
You spot a covie/promethean base. You have four options:
1. Carpet bomb the area (Gets rid of light vehicles like ghosts and kills weak-medium enemies who are not indoors.
2. Calls a squad of 9 marines and a warthog, standard gear, decent AI. They can create distractions fot you.
3. Drops a small squad of 3 ODST's. Hardened badasses that can receive orders directly from you, they are a sniper, a CQC specialist and a bombs/explosives specialist.
4. An EMP strikes the base, everyone including you loses their shields and vehicles are disabled during 30 seconds. Also you won't be able to reestablish contact with the UNSC until 6 minutes have passed. It is a very risky trade, specially in Legendary. Oh and BTW enemies won't be dumbasses who freely expose their heads, so mostly everyone (except grunts, sorry Flip Yap) puts on a mask who cover their faces but reduces their line of sight. One reason for the UNSC support quality being pathetic is that they won't follow you very often. And if you try to bring them around forcibly, they tend to deload.
What's the point of saving them at the Infinity holdout fight if they're just going to deload? I think it'd have been better to script them to follow you and get in the Pelican at the end of rally point bravo (not to mention it'd have been better to let us ride in the Pelican instead of fading to black).
But you know what's most disturbing? The ones that don't have any scripting are the most useful.
The last time a marine was seen killing badass sneaky sword Elites with a shotgun was in Reach and that was just an easter egg!
Just look at what happens when you stop the idiot marines at the holdout fight from running amok. Beautiful carnage. I could keep fighting without getting off the turret for a shield recharge.
As for your idea,
I'd prefer if the AI weren't able to drive (instead, driving command is on the d-pad). They were much more valuable in CE because they stayed in their seats so positioning the vehicles was key. Even in Halo 2, they can be useful when they lose their driving ability (at the IWHBYD fight).
Anyways, those would be excellent with some tweaking.
While I hated how the Pelicans in Reach were armed to the teeth and had tendency to steal kills (especially on lower difficulties), it'd have been nice to have a few situations where I had Pelican assistance (turns out the Pelican that drops off the Hog on Infinity has fully functioning weaponry).
Seems like it's a tradition for Pelicans to get shot down no matter how advanced they get. Pitiful.
UNSC continues to be shown as incompetent, inept (in Spartan Ops) and typically has incompetent leadership, minus Capt. Keyes. It's no wonder why Halo is losing it's appeal.
Post Human-Covie War is about hate and paranoia and showing off power, Cold War style. Even the Didact is all about the hate and power. Simply boring.
