Okay so 3/4 of my speakers have gone silent one by one but occasionally they will just suddenly work again then stop. Does anyone know what the problem is specifically? Can I fix it at home or do I need to take it to a shop?

Check the wiring between your speakers and the headunit. if something is loose/disconnected, you will lose your sound in those speakers. This WILL require you to pull your stereo and pop some door panels.

First rule of sound system troubleshooting: Check the wires/cables.

Try this first. Its most likely the cause. If you're uncomfortable just take it to a shop, its better than messing it up.

That should be assumed as more of a general law, or something.

okay. I had taking my radio out then back in becuase I was suppose to get a new radio but the mechanics couldn't wire. Funniest thing about that is that he thinks Chevrolet is a Japanese company and tried to he a Japanese wiring manual for it

The wiring manual would likely have been to match the Chevy color codes to the stereo, which is probably Japanese.

Does this really count as a car problem? Its a stretch in my mind.

Car audio, yeah. Not with the actual mechanical functionality of the car.

Most likely one of the wires are touching the bare metal of the mount on the door, and shorting out the speaker.

It won't damage them, but they won't work until you fix them, which will require you to pull the door panels to access the speakers. You can't just take off that metal covering, you'll wreck it trying to get it off.

Once you have the speakers exposed just check the wiring and wrap it in electrical tape so it can't happen again.

I don't know why I never thought of this. My front passenger door speaker goes in and out, and everything is connected. Never thought to check the rest of the wiring to make sure it isn't touching metal.

Will agree with everyone else that intermittent on/off working is generally the sound of a bad connection.

Does not necessarily have to be a ground - can be the power connections as well.

Seems weird though as each speaker generally has its own independent ground and wiring - odd for them all to go at once if they were working previously.
