Saw a girl in COD yesterday, had a really obvious girl gamertag name so i asked "So Blonde barbie are you actually a girl?" She replied with yes i am, so my curiosity was satisfied. I ended up killing her at least a dozen times while only getting killed myself once or twice by explosives. Most girl gamers i meet are usually bad, so thats all i have to say on the matter.

I'm not saying, I'm just saying some of the best Halo 3 players I ever ran with were women.

I have yet to play a girl in a game that makes me say "Wow, i just got my ass handed to me."

Maybe not but just because you were unaware they were a female oes not mean it didn't happen. Despite some women (OP) who love getting attention, for the most part "real" girl gamers will just play and not let anything like that affect them.

You're being ridiculous if you think everyone here is posting 100% serious all the time.

Nothing should be done about it because there is nothing wrong with making jokes about any one gender. Threats in PMs are different and should not be tolerated.
Oh, people joke around. Absolutely! They do that in real life, too. Nobody is serious 100% of the time.

But my point is that some things just aren't jokes. In the same way that I would never poke fun at someone who was born disabled or black or LGBT or anything else that they can't change, I don't think it's acceptable to poke fun at people based on their gender. That's just...not a joke. There's nothing funny about it.

But by all means, laugh at me for my choice of hobbies, football teams, favourite books, music, whatever. There's a difference.

Oh really? You made the statement, therefore the burden of proof is upon you to provide a credible sociological source stating that people who make sexist jokes on the internet come from the same culture as people who enslaved someone based on their race.

Also, who gives a -blam!- if you don't think they're funny? Does that mean you deserve the right to deny the satisfaction that other people may derive from the joke?
Uh...we're all living in contemporary Western culture right now - at least, I am, and I assume you are. It's a culture that, especially online, is unfortunately fraught with undertones of bigotry and hate against many different groups of people. Unless you literally live on a different planet, you can prove this by going outside. :P

Jokes don't turn people in racists or sexists. Those people were or weren't racist/sexist beforehand.

That's not the argument I'm making. By making sexist, racist, homophobic, or any of those sorts of jokes, you're trivializing the underlying truth behind the joke. By making "women belong in the kitchen joke", you're trivializing the real problem that is the lack of women participating in various industries.
Or more likely you're making fun of the fact that at one point we thought it was okay for women to be in the kitchen or doing chores and nothing else really and now think it is ridiculous we ever felt that way. And so we make fun of that by making jokes.

Except it really isn't, because that's a real attitude that plenty of people hold, and it has damaging real-world consequences.

I think you're missing the point. The argument is not that those two groups subscribe to the same culture. It is that the cultures they belong to both looked at the problems they were facing and responded with a Burkean "well, that's just the way things are, so we might as well leave them be".
You're attempting to connect people making jokes on the internet and people who physically enslaved people and forced them to work for no profit. That doesn't smell like a big steaming pile of -blam!- to you?

The thing about it is, how do you change the internet? You can free slaves and offer equality in the real world, but that doesn't work on the internet. The internet is not a single domain that can be conquered and forced to become tame. So you're comparing something that can't change to something that could. Complaining about it on an internet forum is doing nothing either because there is no real solution to a problem that you're making yourself by taking the internet as srs bidns.

You have to make a personal effort. If everybody who posted in this thread made a genuine effort to avoid sexist jokes or objectifying women online, it would make a real and noticeable difference to this community.

Make rules and enforce them. Change social attitudes by making the prevailing attitude one that encourages equality and discourages bigotry and hatefulness.

Plenty of places manage it. Female-dominated fora do it all the time, and it's not because most of the members are women - it's because the standards are different, and they're maintained at that level despite the fact that plenty of people try to misbehave. It's possible, though difficult. But the fact that it's hard to do doesn't mean it shouldn't be done.

Again, so the -blam!- what? You want everyone to hold hands around the campfire and roast marshmallows? Are you going to offer a solution other than, "Gawsh, why can't we all just get along!", because suggesting that everyone wipe a certain mindset from their way of thinking is an utter bull-blam!- way of going about things.

Men and women of all races and cultures come online and laugh at racist and offensive jokes. These are the people who understand that the internet isn't serious business.

Everybody's suffering from real sexism. Sometimes that's because they're forced to stay indoors when they're without a male escort, other times it's because they live in a culture that tells them that it's wrong for them to be ambitious.

It's not about being offensive, it's about contributing to a patriarchal culture, where women are often seen as objects. It's easy to say that a sexist joke is just made in good fun, but there are real problems there that still exist. The punchline is never "and then the culture upholding the sexist power structure dissolved and society benefited from the equality that ensued".

Well, as someone who has their life affected by this on a daily basis (as a female LGBT person of colour, three for three!), I find it pretty hard to see the humour in the continued perpetuation of the marginalisation of disadvantaged groups.

But you're right. Maybe I just don't have the right sense of humour required to laugh at discrimination. I think I'd have to be a far nastier person in order to find that funny.
