My view on the matter is that people online will always insult you for something. If you're a girl, you get insulted for being a girl. If you're from France you get called a coward. If you're from various Arabian places you're a terrorist.
False.
Let's accept the fact that online communities of video games, sci-fi, technology, and others are predominantly male. To be more specific, white males between the ages of 15-25. Browsing through picture threads and knowing what people I talk with do in their free time can confirm this point. Let's face it, most girls aren't interested in playing "Call to Honor Shoot 'em up 5", and even fewer are interested in posting on forums about it. That's not to say girls are strictly all about fashion and whatnot, plenty of my female friends are huge Doctor Who fans, which I assume is a rather "nerdy" thing to do (I don't watch the show so I'm assuming a lot).
So when specifics about a user's age, sex, or race come up, and it doesn't meet the norm of white male aged 15-25, you're bound to attract some attention to yourself. Most likely negative attention, since most of the people who spend their nights socializing on forums probably have something wrong with them, usually in the vein of socialization.
Long story short, people will only insult you if you're different. Which isn't the different person's fault, its the insulter that needs to change.
I feel like discussing this, so if someone wants to reply to this, please do.
