Case and point: don't worry about it. Girls start getting boobies pretty soon, and then you'll have plenty of other things to think about. Being an Inheritor is not a life goal.

Not gonna quote that massive post, however I think you're taking this far too seriously. I don't understand why you're so upset people on this forum act like typical Internet people.

Why should just insults directed towards females be banned? Why are we not allowed to address a females looks I they choose to post a picture of themselves? We're allowed to insult and critique only guys' appearances?
Her entire post is pointless because it's not feasible anyway. It's unfortunate that she took the time to write all of it though. Wanting to change the way the internet, or even how a mass majority like The Flood, reacts to certain people is like trying to stop plane crashes by implementing a law saying that planes can't crash.

I believe she wants equality for all.
Which means bull-blam!- on the internet. As soon as you make your first post, you either fall in with the masses or you differentiate yourself from them.

Why are typical internet people bigoted jackasses? Why is "it's just the internet" an excuse for bad behaviour?
Because they can be. This is the internet. Anonymity reigns supreme and there are no true consequences to just being a dickwagon or a troll.

Because when people are anonymous that's just the way they are. It's not gonna change and if you care so much you should get off the Internet.

I agree. What do you think can be done to stop this, or at least prevent the trend from continuing any more?
Honestly?

Firstly, stop making it acceptable to derail discussions like this. People should realise that doing so is perpetuating the skewed double standard in itself - and if they continue to do it, they should be treated as though their contributions are socially unacceptable. In the case of a forum, that means banning them, or excluding them from membership all together.

Secondly, get rid of the myth that people who don't laugh at bigoted humour just "don't get it", or "need to lighten up". There's really nothing humorous about derailing a conversation with a sexist joke, or reducing a woman to nothing more than her appearance and sex. People in this very thread have claimed that they only made such comments to make any women reading angry. That's sexist in itself, isn't it? They know that they can take a serious discussion and trivialise it by joking, because as male members of this forum, they hold the balance of power and get to decide which topics are serious/worthy and which aren't.

Thirdly, stop acting as though "she's ugly" (or for that matter, "she's hot") are valid critiques of a female member's contributions. There are female members of this site - not even talking about myself here - who have been slammed and ridiculed for their looks, as though that's what's important about them. Now, regardless of whether someone does find them attractive, how is that relevant to the conversation at hand, 99% of the time? I could have three eyes and the warty nose of a witch, and it shouldn't matter - if I post a video of me discussing something else, that shouldn't be the talking point, not in my case, not in anyone's. We don't criticise male vloggers or cosplayers for their looks, so why do we do it with women?

Fourthly, get rid of the idea that it's all right to make incredibly personal/vulgar comments about female members. The other day, I had someone claim that they wanted to hunt me down and kill me. I've had PMs from people describing how they want to force themselves on me in the past. I know I'm not the only one. These guys know they can instantly take away a little of whatever power I might have by reminding me that I'm small and weak and that violence against me is a threat I always have to take seriously, no matter what the source. This is a problem on a much larger level than the more superficial stuff, and I've been able to rely on staff here in the past to handle things when they get that ugly. But it shouldn't be happening in the first place.

The thing that really needs to change is people's attitudes - both men's and women's, because women do all of these things too. The idea that only people who take life too seriously care about this stuff is a toxic one. It allows people to trivialise serious problems - not just this, but plenty of similar problems, too, like the way online communities treat people of colour, or LGBT members. It's really sad that most people see this thread as a joke, when that very attitude only contributes to the perpetuation of this kind of culture.

Oh wow talk about over analyzing. The reason why guys say those things is to trash talk. Now we can't say "haha virgin" or "you have a small wang" or "I lift more than you" to a female so we say you are fat or ugly or something. And its not like every guy will trash talk or troll you, its just some people and you overreact and think its all men like any femenisit would. It's just trash talk and if we weren't to trash talk females equally with our male counter parts wouldn't we in fact be sexist?

Because when people are anonymous that's just the way they are. It's not gonna change and if you care so much you should get off the Internet.
But that's not true at all. This forum does have rules - there are things that are and aren't acceptable. People may try to do things that aren't acceptable, but they're eventually found and punished. If they try again, they're punished again and again until they follow the rules or leave.

Online communities can shape their members' behaviour. They can do it quite easily by instituting rules and then enforcing them. This community does that already - but for some reason, this particular attitude is not one it chooses to curb. My question is: if we make it unacceptable to post shock site links or any number of other bad, detrimental behaviours, why not make this unacceptable, too? Why not teach people that this behaviour isn't allowed until the vast majority of people no longer do it, and the people who continue to do so are treated the way we treat other kinds of troll?

Why are people so resistant to the idea that even when anonymous, people can be taught to behave themselves or face the consequences, when they see that in action every day?

........*sigh*

You know what? Forget it.

You do know the reason he made that joke is to get people like you to rage right? Do you really think people actually mean that sort of stuff?

As far as I know, that is something an arsehole would write.

It's something someone would write knowing they'll get entertainment from people who take a videogame internet forum too seriously.

Why are you implying that I am taking it seriously? I think my last line pretty much shows that most insecure boys are all around this forum.

He asked, I answered.

I don't give a crap if people trash talk me about my gaming ability, my taste in books, my sports team, or any other thing that is not dependent on something about myself that is completely unchangeable. I react the same way to jokes about my race or orientation.

Making derogatory jokes about one gender is NOT the same as physically beating people or owning people.

Nice try.

  • 01.01.2013 8:39 PM PDT

Here's my take on this i am fine with any one who decides to play video games. be man woman or child. however i don't enjoy when i am called -blam!- a virgin or some other derogatory term. i have met a possible total of 6 or 7 girls in my online gaming days. only three of which have treated me like garbage. i give everyone a fAir chance and don't be dick immedietly. i get to know the person and base my response on there tone. tl:dr some girls are dicks online others are cool.

Just don't take anything someone says on the Internet seriously. They are being jerks for the sake of being jerks. They only want to get a reaction out of you, and if you let it get to you they win.

The thing is though, this doesn't need to have a rule. As I've said before, everyone is judged on the internet. You're not special because you're a girl. If you let personal information like your gender out, you need to expect that there will be backlash. If I were to tell everyone that I have a spider growing out of my earlobe and posted pictures, I'm not going to get upset because people judge me based off of that later on. Also, have you ever considered that people are being jerks to you, not because they're he-man woman haters, but because they're reaping the rewards of anonymity?

people can be taught to behave themselves or face the consequences, when they see that in action every day?No, they can't. At least not on the internet. You're not changing the forum by instituting a you can't be mean to women rule, you're simply attempting to suppress people. The people who get banned aren't going to just say, "Oh well, I guess I'll be nice to women now."

Then what the -blam!- is the point of this thread? Are you speaking for women across the internet? If so, then what gives you the right to?

Not the same, but a perpetuation of the same culture.

Sexism doesn't become funnier just because it happens to be non-violent. (And as I've pointed out up-thread, both I and other female members here/elsewhere have received death threats or threats of assault before, so for some people, the jump is clearly a little too easy to make.)

I know that it's not the same thing, but it illustrates that certain perceptions only persevere as long as people allow them to and don't take action.

Yeah! Who cares about whether a large subset of the population are treated in a way that is not only unfair to them, but detrimental to the quality of the communities with which they choose to engage?

Let's make another vs thread instead.

Again, while I'm sorry you have no patience for people who put thought into their posts, that's your problem, not mine.
I guess it matters if you take the internet seriously.

Hardly.

One culture is making rude, lewd comments for their own amusement and to get a rise out of people and the other culture is to perpetuate human ownership and physical punishment with close to no limit.

And you ever wonder maybe you get the threats you get because people simply don't like you and the most obvious difference between you and the majority of those who sent those is most likely your gender, so that's the easiest to pounce on for insults. Easiest way to illicit emotions from females is to tell them something along the lines of the threats you've received and it works.

Messed up? Of course.
