I see these comments in society a lot. If someone doesn't agree with you they are automatically inclined to be your enemy, and reply with their opinion on the subject; which is one of the biggest issues for flaming and insults on the Internet. The mods/Bungie can't do much to stop this, they aren't here to babysit every member and to make sure no one gets offended. Even if we had a small army of mods we couldn't do that. The only thing that you can do to these "offensive" comments would be to report them.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

The only problem is they often go unreported as people would rather have "street justice".

If you make the problem "A huge problem with this community" or act like it is, it can make it much worse.

Sure there is flaming and trolling but it is not as bad as OP says it is. The threads he posted as evidence shows a contradiction in that we are improving. The strict policies have been abolished and the forums are not like what they were.

I think a lot of this thread is assumptions and stereotypes from people who rarely use the flood and other cliches.

It depends what you think is "offensive" because I seem to remember Recon saying if it doesn't break the rules and you report it you can get banned. Which is why I don't report anything just to be safe.

Each situation is different and the mods use common sense when issuing bans. If someone is reported for having a different opinion but doesn't break the rules, they won't get banned.

Yeah, but what i'm saying is I report you lets say because you said something that is offensive to me but doesn't break the rules and they see that then I get banned not you.

Technically the rules say "don't be a jerk" so if I said something offensive I would be breaking the rules.

The only way i see around it is if I said something that was not meant to be offensive but was taken the wrong way or the person who posted it did not mean it in the sense of how it was presented. This happens a lot and it is no big deal. People like to joke, kid around, but sometimes it can go too far.

But I think if you get offended by something, it is best to ignore it and report it. If it continues to happen, report it to a ninja. The problem is if people learn they can get away with saying stuff, they will keep doing it.

Yes, which is why the community should use common sense when reporting a post. A user might find a perfectly appropriate post to be racist, and report it. Of course, if that post isn't breaking any of the addressed forum rules purposely then it will not be removed. It's all up to the member reporting the post to use common sense.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

We should just make Harlow a moderator. He seems to be good at patrolling the scary part of town.

Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

Until they get bored or cross a line. I can pester someone well below the line of the rules and get a heated reaction from them, and I will keep doing it. However, if I am ignored, I'll get bored.

I don't even know why I am explaining this. What you said is technically right, but short-sighted. Yes, people will skirt the line, but only if it suits them. You ignore this part, so you argument isn't really valid.

Besides, you didn't even make an argument. The only thing I can really extrapolate from your post is that you want people punished for getting away with being a jerk. Might not be what you were trying to say, but you need to clarify.

I know you're referring to the Sapphire, but I honestly didn't see any hostility in Harlow's post. I'm actually pretty sure that I'm in Sapphire's sears'd list and all I see in the OP is 100% truth. The hostility is the one and only reason I don't usually visit the main forums anymore. No matter what you say, if it's an opinion of some sort it will get flamed. No matter what.

I agree with him, the attitude of the community in this site is a problem which has driven many people, and will drive many people away. It needs to be fixed.

I think how the person treats people also is reflective of how we view their threads.

Take this thread for example

You imply a level of control over Halo: Reach matchmaking that we no longer have. Or, in your vernacular, it isn't our shiznit anymore.

Active 9/1/11, Heroic 12/25/12

What can we do as a community to improve the quality of the site?

1. Don't respond to bait. The only reason offensive discussion goes on is because people respond to it. You have to have enough common sense to enter an offensive thread, report it, and leave without responding. What do you do when someone throws an insult at you? Nothing. Go on with your discussion like nothing happened. If you're hard-skinned and have an understanding of self-control then this is common sense, the problem is people can't seem to grasp this simple concept. Recon hit the nail on the head.Posted by: Recon Number 54
One can participate in the serious and non-mudslinging discussion and ignore the airborne sludge.

Those who look and are wise enough to "stay out of it" have my respect, but albeit my respect for their non-participation.

Those who have the spirit and the ability to ignore barbs, not bite at bait, and (if there is one) focus on the matter being discussed and utterly ignore the whirlwind of distractions... those people are towers in a storm.

2. Use the report button wisely. If someone is being a jerk and crossing your line, then you should report them. I bet the Ninja's would much rather see too many posts in their report queue than members getting away with being jerks.

3. Lead by example. New members are going to look up to people with shiny bars, be the person that the new members want to be. Don't participate in the immaturity that some people display.
