If you assign every letter of the alphabet a number, a is 1, b is 2, etc., and you take all of the values of the word "MATH", and add them, you get 42. So math is the meaning of life, the universe, and everything.

This thread has nothing to do with private groups, but Harlow is the admin of Sapphire, which tends to inspire rage in many.
I've been wondering since the start, but not one person has given any valid response.

You're gonna have to be a wee bit more detailed than that.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

I could list many reasons and even cite the irony this thread creates because of that, but that would be off topic.

But I think private groups are way more guilty of these issues than the mains, like the one we just talked about. It depends on what kind of atmosphere you are trying to create.

A PM with a list will be fine. I'm serious, please don't give it in a half-assed manner.

If you're talking hostility, I don't see it in any private groups. In TFS we say some pretty horrific stuff to each other, but almost all of it is joking around or someone getting fired up by a Kika post.

"Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened."

OP, there will always be mean, cruel, distrustful people in this world.

The only difference between it being in real life and on the internet is the security of a computer monitor or screen of a phone or other similar electronic gizmos.

Wishing for the bad to go away is a pipe dream, and will never happen. Still, keep your chin up; good will always prevail.

I know you're referring to the Sapphire, but I honestly didn't see any hostility in Harlow's post. I'm actually pretty sure that I'm in Sapphire's sears'd list and all I see in the OP is 100% truth. The hostility is the one and only reason I don't usually visit the main forums anymore. No matter what you say, if it's an opinion of some sort it will get flamed. No matter what.

I agree with him, the attitude of the community in this site is a problem which has driven many people, and will drive many people away. It needs to be fixed.
All of this.
I'll admit, Harlow and Jay have never been particular favorites of mine, but right now I've agreed with everything they've said in this thread and around the issue. They seem to actually be in the few showing the most sense at the minute.

Seems that more than a few people are ignoring the issues presented though, in favour of attacking or demeaning the people presenting them themselves. How ironic.

I don't think the "it's the internet, get over it" attitude is appropriate either.

On the subject of reporting, that's a flawed system in of itself. It requires that the majority of people actually addressing the post in question have a problem with it, which, as demonstrated by this thread, and most likely at least one on the front page of the Flood, is not going to happen because those people are the ones with the attitudes of "it doesn't matter" or they join in. The ones who do attempt to step in as well as report just get the tide turn on them, the poster in question as a subject receives more hostility and, at best, the thread is locked after hitting a sizable number of replies and the perpetrators get a warning or ban, usually bypassed by another alt which runs rampant until the whole cycle starts again. Either that or no bans get issued and the members carry on behaving in a despicable or inappropriate manner.

So far, in the Flood at least, most of the people disagreeing with Harlow and Jay are the perpetrators, at least to a degree, but because most people here have the attitude of "internet people are dicks, get over it" anyone who speaks out against the situation get called "butthurt", "wimps" and other similar insults to varying degrees, often having to be filtered or bypassing the filter (for which most times, nothing gets done).

I've seen, most recently, people saying "Oh, there are much worse forums than this place", "consider yourselves lucky", "it used to be worse than this", "if you want civil conversations, get off the internet" and other such BS, as if the victims (for lack of a better word) should be grateful for some reason.

Do people really excuse this?

Please stop complaining about the 'death of a loved one' it's my job. They probably deserved it anyways. Here's a warning, if you keep making pentagrams out of the neighbors livestock I will personally come to your house and kill everyone you love. Now leave me alone, I got to get back to work.

I'm going to be straight up with you guys, the report button sucks. It seems when ever I report something the user never gets banned and his post never gets hidden away. I've tried to take care of this problem with the report button. It's useless. I need mod powers, I would't let you guys down. Let me help you take down jerks and spammers. :)

Better question, why do people insist on "returning fire" when they feel that they've "been attacked"?

That is the problem that I see. If people want the community to be nicer, it starts with them and their own actions. Reward/recognize/perpetuate rudeness or bad behavior and you have no leg to stand on and proclaim that "this place and the people are mean".

I would love for people to get the idea of "I was only defending myself against an obvious attack" out of their quiver. Because what is an "obvious attack" to the person who feels offended is (more often than not) not likely to reach the "that was offensive" threshold of anyone other than the individual who feels that they are being attacked.

If people want "better forums" then simply be "better members". No one, NO ONE, can "make you" reply in a "oh yeah? well blam you too buddy" response. People choose to do so. And what then? Other people see the two wallowing in the mud, and figure "well, when I perceive a slight or attack, I guess that IS the proper response."

If the moderators were to clamp down and "try to look at it from MY (the offended member's) point of view" for perceived insults, attacks or meanie-ness... then we'd be banning any two people who strongly disagree and aren't very skilled at disagreeing in a way that better hides their dislike for someone who doesn't share their view.

Which when you're a post-adolescent with online anonymity, ANYONE who disagrees with you is going to be seen as "wrong, stupid, or attacking" you. I (for one) am not about to try to defend the egos and sensibilities of people who aren't able to tell the difference between someone who they see as "a jerk because they don't agree with or like me" and someone who is being a jerk to anyone and everyone for the illicit joy of being an online prick.

The Flood is beyond fine. I don't understand how some can come to this conclusion that it's a vile and hostile place.

I've been a regular poster in The Flood since the Summer of 2008 and not once have I ever been flamed or attacked for a post I made or an opinion of mine I've stated. Maybe I'm just lucky. I don't know. I tend to view things with a positive outlook and find The Flood a great, laid back and entertaining place.

Like Recon said, people need to learn how to not fall prey to people bating a thread for a flame-war. Learn to not give a -blam!- about people trying to take the piss out of you online and you'll have a much better experience.

I don't disagree, but as I mentioned, those sort of people tend (not always) to be the majority. Of course you can claim it's easy to ignore, but the fact is that a lot of people, even sensible and modest people, don't like or often deserve the initial and most often subsequent barrage of abuse. I know that trying to defend oneself, even in a civil fashion usually makes things worse and I don't discredit that.

However, it's obvious that the only people with the power here are the ones who just don't care how obnoxious, tactless and downright blatantly insulting they are, and it doesn't seem that much gets done about those people in particular.

Yes, you can say "lead by example", but the people in question are not the sort who respect that or follow example, as long as they're content spouting hate and upsetting people. On the other side, as long as someone is being nasty, at least one person will be trying to placate them.

It's not really an issue with heated debates or discussions getting out of hand, it's more centered on the people who just completely lack common courtesy, decency and manners in favour of pouring out their poor judgement and attitudes knowing full well that they won't face any lasting repercussions or motive to change.
