While I can't offer a reasonable solution considering I would love to see the hateful deviants of the flood given a 3 month vacation or every infraction.

But I do believe the overall problem is well beyond the boundaries of Bungie. A social issue involving self entitlement and what not. But that is another topic all together. I see it like a summer heat wave. It will happen no matter what, you can find shade to alleviate the heat for a bit, but you aren't going to really cool down unless you go inside. Banning everybody for everything (my evil solution) is like trying to solve the heat wave with a giant air conditioner.

I'm not so sure the last part holds much truth, though. I've reported some users recently, as I've actually noticed the issues Harlow mentioned in the OP. To me, there is truth there. And yet, none of the things I reported where there was blatant, outright flaming going on, was actually dealt with at all. I'm sure you'd get sick of it if we were to PM, you when it wasn't dealt with. Lose lose situation, in a sense.

While I agree the moderation team could step it up a little bit, the larger issue will never be dealt with. That larger issue is human nature on the internet. It won't change, ever. Not here, at least. All we can do is report it, and hope the mods enforce and scout a little bit more.

Wow this is serious business isn't it.

I'm sure you'll write me off as one of the people you mentioned in your OP, but I really don't see a problem. This website isn't becoming a breeding grounds for the scum of the earth or anything. We're all just a bunch of nerds talking about stuff. The moderators and staff do a great job keeping this place safe, friendly, and open.

What you're getting at is a societal problem, not an issue solely on this website. People are always going to take advantage of their anonymity on the Internet and use it to talk about their fringe opinions. It's easier and consequence free that way. Obviously some of those people are always going to come here, and the site is set up in such a way as to deter most of it.

Yep

I concur. You cannot 'fix' the hostility you see. If the 'assailant' is banned, he can make an alt. And will continue to do what he does.

I'm trying to become an '04, but it's not working too well."

Every community I've ever been a part of has had its fair share of jerks.
When you become a large part of that community, you will find a lot more attention brought upon yourself, positive and negative.

Seeing as though you run "The best private group on Bungie.net", I can very easily see you receiving a lot of undeserved hate. Bummer, right?

I agree.

You people are jerks.

  • 01.01.2013 10:13 PM PDT

You realize that you started all of this drama, right?

I can't believe there's drama on a game developer's forum to begin with, honestly.

Per Audacia Ad Astra

I read all your posts in RDJ's voice. It's so satisfying.

OT: I haven't noticed this nastiness; maybe it has become the norm and I have been shrugging off any insults.

What I do agree with, is the culture problem. There has been a significant decay in user... quality, so hopefully a fresh batch of players brought on by Destiny will restart the system.

You can't see the hostility? You must be under a spell.

Well, now that I've reread, I do see some. I somehow doubt it was intentional, though. I think he wants to discuss the problem, not add to it.

There's no way, whatsoever, to change this.

It isn't a problem.

Even if something is no changeable, does not mean it is not a problem.

Case and point: don't worry about it. Girls start getting boobies pretty soon, and then you'll have plenty of other things to think about. Being an Inheritor is not a life goal.

But... both of the threads you linked as examples were obviously going to spark flame wars. I don't really ever see people throwing out insults like crazy in normal threads.

This is a perfect example of what I just talked about. I didn't say anything nasty to you or anyone, friend.

Posted by: Harlow
Before I begin, let me clarify something. This thread is mostly in reference to threads on the Flood, because the Septagon is saturated with employees, moderators, and people dedicated to pleasing the previous two groups, and because the game forums have effectively died.

Posted by: Harlow
This is a perfect example of what I just talked about.

Posted by: Harlow
and people dedicated to pleasing the previous two groups,

How is this not offensive? You indirectly calling the Septagon a bunch of suck ups. That statement is not only false but it's rude and hostile.

How about you answer your own question.

Why do you have to act this way?

I didn't say anything nasty to you or anyone, friend.

Neither did I friend.

I didn't indirectly call everyone in the Septagon anything. I said that people here were dedicated to pleasing moderators and employees. What is it you think mods and employees want? People to follow the rules, which is exactly what I said Septagon members did (at least within the Septagon).

That was a completely unfair assumption.

Look peeps, Harlow is trying to say that we should report people who are being jerks. He isn't trying to start a revolution, he is just trying to get people to use their reporting power more. That's what I got from his thread at least.

Jerks are bad for business, we don't want that. Report and move on, that the slogan. Right?

If what you say is an indication of how all moderators operate, then the problem is with the regular members themselves more so than the moderating team.

Either way, what I'm saying to the mod team is that a lot of terrible stuff goes down within long, controversial threads that moderators always seem to not bother to read.

Posted by: Silentone2
You're talking about changing the behavior of a massive group of people, one which almost no authoritative power is held over (even thought that's the worst way to influence the type of behavior you want).

The authoritative power over them is the ability to ban them from the forums until they change their attitudes.

I admit that I was wrong on one point in my OP. It does happen on the Septagon, just not quite as much. Or at least it's ignored if someone doesn't have a bad ban history.

Posted by: LiberatorOfMind
You realize that you started all of this drama, right?

What? I already said that I didn't post in either of the threads linked in my OP. Are you saying that hostility was only introduced on Bungie.net when I made my account?

This just can't be a serious post.

Posted by: jacob crawford
But he has past and present.

I guess it's a waste of time talking about this, because people like Jacob and Verachi and DMG will continue posting this kind of stuff - within a thread about hostility, no less - and nothing will done about it.

Because in the grand scheme of things, why does it matter if we run members off the site, right?

People will tell me I'm one of the jerks. And look, I know I overstep the line sometimes when I'm joking. None of us are perfect, but I don't think asking members to attempt to be decent (and mods to enforce decency when needed) is too much to ask.
