Roll with the hits, not under them.

No, you can't have it. But thanks for asking!

The Flood kinda reminds me of that bar with the sign on the bathroom stall doors that says "Please do not throw toothpicks or matches in our toilets, as our crabs know how to pole vault." There's a certain seedy charm to the shenanigans that go on in there, and if it were totally sterile and void of the occasional bar fight, it just wouldn't be the same.

With that said, I have been known on occasion to report posts, mostly for blatant racism, over the top violent threats, and the "go kill yourself" comments that some few people feel are appropriate. Some of the more petulant trolls aren't even worth reporting because they feed off the banhammer like a toddler with a sticky, dog hair covered lollipop, but some of the nastiness that gets spewed is occasionally from people who otherwise have good sense, and possibly a short ban can help them see the error of their ways.

For the most part, it really isn't any more hostile than any other online forum.

People will tell me I'm one of the jerks. And look, I know I overstep the line sometimes when I'm joking. None of us are perfect, but I don't think asking members to attempt to be decent (and mods to enforce decency when needed) is too much to ask.[/quote]

Right....you only wrote that because you know you're a hypocrite. You write hostile posts but yet you fight against hostility. Sense it makes not.

I'll ask you again, or I guess you will.

Why do you have to act this way?

Look guys, let's not look the person here. Let's look at the idea. Idk about you guys, but I like the idea of having people report jerks. I'm not defending Harlow, but rather his idea.

Case and point: don't worry about it. Girls start getting boobies pretty soon, and then you'll have plenty of other things to think about. Being an Inheritor is not a life goal.

I guess it's a waste of time talking about this, because people like Jacob and Verachi and DMG will continue posting this kind of stuff - within a thread about hostility, no less - and nothing will done about it.

Because in the grand scheme of things, why does it matter if we run members off the site, right?
The thing about the members you listed though, they're pointing out that you could have followed the advice you're giving now earlier.

They're not being "jerks" which is what I assume you're getting at there.

Report moar is hardly a new idea. It's been said many times before, and the problem remains the same. People aren't reporting.

I'm surprised that Harlow didn't point me out for being hostile when I said that another group was better than Sapphire on The Flood and he kicked me from Sapphire.

Because you know...I was being SO hostile towards Sapphire that Harlow just HAD to kick me.

Also what is considered hostility? By who's definition are we going to go by? The way I see it, the mods use their own judgement for things like this. Just because you think something is hostile doesn't mean it is. Just because you reported something because you feel its against the rules doesn't mean it is. If you feel really strongly about something PM a mod. Not sure how much they'll like that but if it's bothering you that much let them know.

I'm trying to help Harlow see that he is part of the huge problem he is trying to fix. Maybe he should set an example instead of using empty words. Actions speak louder then words. A hostile person telling others to not be hostile just doesn't seem right to me.

Every community I've ever been a part of has had its fair share of jerks.
When you become a large part of that community, you will find a lot more attention brought upon yourself, positive and negative.

Seeing as though you run "The best private group on Bungie.net", I can very easily see you receiving a lot of undeserved hate. Bummer, right?
None of us mentioned that.
Did I say that you had mentioned that? No. I brought it up because I was trying to think of why the OP was experiencing an amount of hate over the "normal" threshold.

Couldn't help yourself, could you? What can I say? If Duardo had posted the OP, I would have cited the fact that he's an employee....moderator...PM him....whatever.... and random people will hate him for their entire lives over a 3 month ban. Harlow definitely gets more hate than he deserves, and the biggest reason i could think of is the one I mentioned.

If you, Jay, had posted this thread, a lot of people would get on your case for being a girl and all that crap. I'd point this out in my reply. as I said, Bummer- right?

Maybe I'm just getting confused, because I surf these forums as much as the next guy and don't see this being an overwhelming issue. It's something that the mods will deal with and something I can selectively ignore. Hopefully more people can do the same.

~rant~

I know a while back, I asked for more carpet bans to deal with "no-duh" rule breaking situations. If someone posts a hate mongering thread towards some minority group, shouldn't everyone and anyone involved in the threads life be banned for keeping it towards the top for any amount of time? Doesn't matter if you posted "banned" or "You shouldn't post that in the mains", you know it's a terrible thread with ill intention and you shouldn't do anything other than click the 'report' button.

~end~

As said before in this thread by another member, this is a societal problem, but there is nothing more we can do than report and move on. right?
I guess we can follow in the footsteps of so many before us by posting threads saying that the situation is dire and we need to do something, but that really is all we can do. we can report, we can move on, and oh hey! We can let the new guys know that the offenders are nothing more than randoms on the internet and there is more to bungie.net than hate.

...right guys?
right?

Who cares? I'm so used to the hostility that I don't even notice it anymore. If you want nice forums, go somewhere else. There are plenty of places that are strict in their nice-ness policies.

Did you read the OP at all? We need to make this place better for new members that will arrive when Destiny is revealed. You being used to the hostility doesn't really help.

"Go somewhere else" doesn't really help either. This problem isn't something we can't deal with, I don't understand why people try to make it look like that.

What? I already said that I didn't post in either of the threads linked in my OP. Are you saying that hostility was only introduced on Bungie.net when I made my account?

This just can't be a serious post.

I wasn't referring to the threads in the OP. I'm referring to your threads in general, including this one.

Exactly. This response makes me very happy, it is a problem that can be dealt with if people really want to deal with it. It shouldn't just the mod's job, it's all of jobs.

No one should be "used' to hostility. We don't need to be chasing new members away with it, we need new members to keep b.net alive and well. It isn't just about reporting more either, it's also about leading by example.

Harlow is almost as good at disguising threads as Jay.

Almost.

The problem is we are meant to believe that you give a damn at all about what happens in the mains, which you of course don't.

This is just about you not liking the way you are treated outside of your castle, and nothing more.

Stopped after the first paragraph. I refuse to consider or listen to the opinion of someone who believes that the Septagon is sycophantic. It's just the opinion of someone who wants to look down on the Community Forum and so they make up a reality around the idea that "there's lots of mods and employees in the Community Forum so all the people there must worship them!"

Grow up.

Wow this is serious business isn't it.

I'm sure you'll write me off as one of the people you mentioned in your OP, but I really don't see a problem. This website isn't becoming a breeding grounds for the scum of the earth or anything. We're all just a bunch of nerds talking about stuff. The moderators and staff do a great job keeping this place safe, friendly, and open.

What you're getting at is a societal problem, not an issue solely on this website. People are always going to take advantage of their anonymity on the Internet and use it to talk about their fringe opinions. It's easier and consequence free that way. Obviously some of those people are always going to come here, and the site is set up in such a way as to deter most of it.

Yep

This. Also, it would be better to preface by admitting to one's own flaws as opposed to post scripting it, especially when the content therein has the potential to contradict observable behaviors as a member ITT noted. It's nice to want action or change done, but in order to make it you first have to be it.

But to reiterate the post I quoted, there's nothing drastic that needs to be done differently at this point that will make anything any different than it has been. If you change the color or size of a milk carton but leave milk inside, it's still milk; The Flood will always be the same so long as the same kind of people are on Bungie.net, and by extension the Internet.

Or we could just close The Flood and end these useless threads.
