I heard or read a rumor in the last few days that you may need a government issued ID in order to play M rated games on the new XBox. More than likely its nonsense, but I hope it's true. I've long been an advocate for an adults only XBL experience, and this would be one way to make it happen.

In short, the XBox 720 is rumored to have a card reader. The gamer, when playing M rated games, will have to either swipe, or insert a government issued ID card to play. The idea is to finally have means to enforce the ESRB rating system, that parents and store clerks ignore.

I know it's more than likely just a rumor, but it's one I hope is true.

Under aged Floodians may flame away now. Go ahead, give into your rage.

This would only work if the Xbox was sold only in America.

More people than ever will then lie about their age.

It's inevitable, Charlie.

GOAT

I'm down for this. I'm 18, so I'm just barely over the legal age, but it might convince me to buy a mic again if I didn't have to deal with kids taking their high school insecurities out on me.

A cornered fox is more dangerous than a jackal.

And from FOX, two phantoms were born.

Thank God I'll be 18 by then if it's true

I eat my milk...

...without any milk.

That would be the dumbest thing that could ever happen.

  • 01.02.2013 7:47 AM PDT

Do you have to register for this Government I.D. or does a license/state ID work? If the latter, wouldn't the kids just use their parents?

manufacturers have different variations for different countries all the time. This wouldn't be a challenge.

I don't see why the parents cannot swipe with their cards and then let the child play?

I'd welcome it. Sounds like a good idea

Remember kids: when Uncle Delta tells you he has sweeties, he isn't lying.

Now get in the van.

The Black Chapter

Can't see it happening based solely on the -blam!- up Microsoft made in its Windows stores by not selling '18' rated games in Europe because they thought it translated to the US 'Adults Only' rating (which I suppose technically it does - just not in terms of the severity of a game being rated thus)

Nahman Jayden, Eff bee eye. I herd that you're the origammy killah...

Couldn't the parents just swipe for the kids regardless?

State license/ID is the government ID they supposedly plan to use.

Would parents give up their driver's license so junior can play Halo? Maybe, but not nearly as often.

I hope this happens just so I can watch the massive amount of Internet rage that explodes because of it.

They could, but this also gives the parents more control over their kid's gaming experience.

Interesting. I haven't heard this rumor. I'm not quite sure how I feel about it though. It doesn't affect me either way though. I'm more than old enough...

manufacturers have different variations for different countries all the time. This wouldn't be a challenge.

Getting the rights to ask for proof of people's ages in other countries would be a challenge.

A lot of countries where the Xbox is sold would lack such a universal card of identification, so that would be another challenge.

Some countries have different age ratings for the same games and so even if underage people from one country couldn't get on then underage children from others could.

The ability to lie about your age is widespread and you can easily fake your age.

That would be a ideal. It may be possible best tool to control underage of playing mature games.

At least I'm 21, I don't care about this. I'll swipe card any-day if it must.

Sorry but underage kids shouldn't be allowed to playing mature games that were meant for adults only.

  • 01.02.2013 7:50 AM PDT

So the main demographic of Xbox players would not be able to play mature games?

Yeah that isn't going to happen. Though it would be nice.
