Dumbest rumor I've ever heard.

Well, it appears people are taking the bait.
Wouldn't surprise me if it was an internal rumor purposely 'leaked' to gauge public reaction should they use such a system.
This is my thought as well. Given the incident at Sandy Hook, there is a lot of unwelcome attention being paid to the gaming industry as a whole. People are looking for a scapegoat, and explaining why a child needs a game where you gun down civilians in an airport become difficult under scrutiny.

I'm not saying its the right thing to do (for this reason), but I see it as a good thing. The ESRB was created so the industry would police itself. Since then, both stores and consumers have chosen to disregard it. The next logical step is to do something like this.

Being an adult, I would welcome the change, as it disturbs me to see kids playing games like Black Ops 2.

Rock bottom is no place to set up camp. Especially in the dark.

I don't see it to be fair to those who're actually mature as an 18 year old. But I guess some bad eggs ruin it for the bunch. I get it, you want to play with mature people, but it isn't necessarily fair to those young gamers who can handle M-rated content and be able to fit in with more adult people.

I wish they would allow signatures at the end of someones post... Would be fun.

I don't really think this would solve any problems.
If this rumor was true, that means Microsoft would lose a -ton- of revenue. And if they added this card reader, that means we would also be getting a lot more ads, to make up for said lost revenue.

Plus, the idea of a "card reader" sounds completely made up. Not sure I would buy something that would require me to slide my ID every time I wanted to play a game.

I'm honestly getting kind of sick of all the "adults" being so overburdened and mad over a younger gamer. We were all young once, no matter how mature you were. A mute button is only a few seconds away, as well as a block and leave button. If you're at a restaurant having a nice meal, and a child starts to cry its eyes out, you can't mute them. Be glad you can on Live.

I've been on Live for a while, and I cannot see a problem so large with underage gamers, that we would need to ban them away completely. It's not that big of a deal.

Sorry for long text.

TL;DR version: Wouldn't solve anything, sounds made up, Microsoft likes money too much, not much of a problem anyway.

In the UK, it's illegal for someone in a store to sell a game to someone under it's rating. If you're under 18, you can't buy an 18 game.

I did the other day, and I'm not 18 for another month :O

I assume you look over 18? Lucky.

Some of them are too trusting though, I guess. But still, most people don't get away with trying to buy a game they're too young to buy.

Again and again and again.

The rumored system would scan an ID. As an underaged gamer, you would just use your parent's ID card. Of course that would mean explaining why you need it...

The only thing is that you would need to explain why you needed it when you asked for it...

What are you exactly? Because you just don't seem to have common sense or know "how things are".

Is a kid really going to ask for an ID? Hell no.

Will a kid just grab the ID from their parents wallet on the counter or table? yes.
What an interesting statement on how you were raised.

It's not about how he was raised, it's about how it actually is. :/

"Mum, can I quickly borrow your ID?"

"Why?"

"To play the over 18 (Or M-Rated if you're from the US) game you bought me..."

This entire "rumour" is flawed. It's not going to happen.

The same reason an adult "needs" a video game. Nobody needs a video game, only wants. Having to explain why you "need" a video game is ludicrous.

Oh, I see. Sorry for the misinterpretation. In that case, it would have a chance of working much more effectively. In a way I'm for this, and in a way I'm against it. I don't want screaming twelve year olds in my online experience, but there's only so much you can do.

If this went through, wouldn't it hurt sales?

  • 01.02.2013 11:13 AM PDT

By the time the 720 comes out Ill be 18. Im still not for it though

Thus I refute thee.

That doesn't infringe on any rights?

I won't be able to play with my brother?

Well, the "Average" gamer, in 2011 (according to the article I posted earlier) is 37 and has been gaming for 20 years. So, underaged gamers aren't the slice of the pie that everyone here is concerned about. They are a big slice, but by no means the biggest.

Now, gaming developers shouldn't be selling to these kids anyways. Its like Phillip Morris complaining about the 18 to smoke law as it cuts into their profits. I know that tobacco and games aren't comparable, but this analogy is pretty apt.

Finally, kids will still get to play. They will just need to get their parent's ID card through fair means or foul. This will cause a larger percentage of parents to look into what their kids are doing when they play. When is parental involvement a bad thing?

  • 01.02.2013 11:19 AM PDT

ESRB ratings only determine who can buy the game, not play it, so that wouldn't make much sense.

That would be an unfair law though. After you buy a product they lose control of it. ESRB rating system doesn't apply to online experiences. Therefore it would give the government the right to intervene on all of your property if it has some sort of rating system.

Sorry Charlie (pun not intended) but I'd prefer to own my products after buying them.
...but its OK to demand ID to see or buy a R rated movie...

This system already exists.
Not after ou purchase the product. I don't have an FBI agent watching me (that I know of) every time I watch a rated R movie on my DVD player.

Which is where you are at fault in thinking a child is seriously going to ask for an ID to play a game they "shouldn't" be playing in the first place.

If anything they would actually ask their older siblings which makes this idea even more useless.

  • 01.02.2013 11:25 AM PDT

This just in: Video game industry collapses. Sales plummet to levels never before seen.

I dont see how this would be useless.

At the very LEAST it would make parents more aware of the games their child is playing. That alone is a good thing.

When the average gamer is 37, and has been playing for 20 years... Why, please explain, would they stop playing?

So wait, by government issued ID, you mean like a driver's license?

Well, what if some of us are 17+, but don't have a driver's license? That's not that fair, you know.

Honestly, the majority of bad experiences with people I've had on LIVE came from people with voices so deep it sounded like they had more than one set of baby makers that dropped so far they could wrap them around their necks like a scarf.

So it's either hang with screaming mentally defective kids or a whole bunch of people that sound like batman with a hint of pot in their system.

Yeah, I'll just stick to party chat.

And I am probably just trolling you right now....especially if it is a controversial thread

...so you can just swipe a parent's drivers license. I'm not a minor, but this just sounds rather idiotic and a national identification card isn't going to happen anyway.
