Life ain't fair bro.

I don't care about "fairness" nor is that my concern which in this topic has been the parenting.

Next thing you know the government will be picking what schools and careers children should have because parents are too stupid to guide them.

We already have them. They're called guidance counselors and every high school has one.

They're actually very helpful. Helped me a ton when I was applying to colleges and deciding my major.

NOTE: This is my new primary account. My old account was AgentCOPP1, and I changed it because it was linked to a gamertag that I no longer use.

That would be really stupid.

Like.... REALLY stupid. I would just get a PS4 if they did that.

Remember, grammar is the difference between; "I helped my uncle Jack off a horse." And "I helped my uncle jack off a horse."
Hyperlinks, you know you want to click 'em

Oh man, oh man, I hope that's true, but even then, that probably want stop the little squeakers from going through their mums purse or their dads wallet in search of their ID's.

Quote from Confucius

By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest.

Well that's like 80% of xbox shares gonna go down because of this. The littl'uns make a big portion of gaming communities.

Yet it happens all the time. If I were to buy my biddy drinks until he passed out it would be seen as not only normal, but good of me. If I were to do the same to you I would be arrested and locked up for a long time.

Life ain't fair bro.

Would you not agree there is a large distinction between drinking until you pass out and acting silly on the internet?

Of course. But its a good example of behavior being appropriate or inappropriate based solely on age.

Being silly on the internet doesn't change much between being underage and of age. Drinking, however, is shown to be detrimental when underage compared to when you're of age. There is a reason why underage people can't drink, but I see no reason why young people can't be stupid on the internet.

Again, it doesn't matter really if something is indeed detrimental. Only that its perceived as such. When enough people see it that way, it becomes that ill defined nebulous "Common Sense." Even if there isn't one fact backing it up.

There has always been a certain level of scrutiny aimed at video games. Recent events has made gaming a convenient scapegoat as the source of society's ills. Rather than have the hard discussion on alienation and bullying, or common sense gun laws, we could blame games and wash our hands of the matter, until the next shooting happens.

We all watched the NRA get up and stand behind a podium and blame video games, movies and a violent society. We then heard that, in that order, being parroted on nearly every talk show. Jack Thompson, god damn him, is becoming relevant again.

Now, I think the rumor is just that. A rumor. The only reason I am willing to post on it is that I can see Microsoft doing this to appease the pissed off mom brigade. Then they can say, "See, we police ourselves. Now go and blame someone else."

I agree with it because I hate playing with kids, but that is another matter all together. I am ageist, I do hate talking t most of you, and I admit it. But I am not defending that.

And I was planning to get a PS4. But say they implemented this system. I'd get an xbox instead. As would alot of others.

If it is true, though I sincerely doubt it, the Xbox will lose many gamers, considering that the majority of people who play are minors.
I don't think you know how very very wrong you are. The average gamer is 37, and has been playing for a long, long time. I've posted this several times. Please feel free to look back a page or two, you will see it there.

That study is irrelevant.
Actually it is, as blade246 said the majority of gamers were minors.

Parents of teenagers who agree with their children being able to play M rated games will probably allow their child to swipe their ID card and play anyway. All this rumor does for Microsoft is cause a population of people who have money to spend on their products a minor annoyance.

It's not as if children playing online M rated games causes much of a disturbance. With party chat and the mute system, you can choose who you want to hear and not hear. A young teenager or child playing an M rated game is just another person behind an online gamertag enjoying and taking part in the same relaxing activity you are. Being below the age of 17 shouldn't be reason for you not to be able to have an enjoyable online experience with games of your preference.

Which that study pretty much acknowledges if the average gamer has been playing since they were before 17. A fact you blatantly ignored.

  • 01.02.2013 1:20 PM PDT

Wait so would you have to scan your license each time you want to play an M-rated game?

If so, that's really stupid; I don't have to scan my driver's license every time I want to start up my car, and there's certainly no way I'm going to swipe it every time I want to enjoy a game.

bro, hes told you this tons of times.

Compare the games back then to the games now.

The games now are a million times more violent.

Ok, now I can totally see where you're coming from. I was more arguing about this ill-defined perception of common sense than your position on the issue. I thought you were attempting to justify the fear whipped up against video games, but now I see it's just your opinion, which I will respect.

I never said whether or not I planned on buying it. I was simply stating that it doesn't make sense that there would be more regulation on playing games than there are on driving cars.

You act like it would be difficult to scan your card. It takes literally one second.

  • 01.02.2013 1:27 PM PDT

Why are you here?

Wouldn't bother me. My parents would let me use their ID to play, as they do know what I'm playing and are perfectly fine with it. It'll never happen though, MS would never give up their money.

Wouldn't work well in my country as everyone gets an identification card at the age of 12 and we lack a rating system for video games.

You're really pulling a lot of inferences out of nothing. I never said I couldn't do it, or that it would cause me distress. Maybe if I repeat myself enough, you'll understand.

I don't understand why there should be more regulations on playing video games than driving a vehicle.

I didn't ignore you at all. I answered you twice.

You can't compare Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 to Sonic the Hedgehog. You can't even compare the latest Mortal Kombat to the original. And MK was the game that started this whole damned debate.

Games today are much more graphic in their depiction of violence than ever before. You really can't compare them. Now, I know you are sitting there either confused or smug. I will go with confused, because you keep coming back to this.

The point you are missing is that the ID card is only rumored to be for M rated games. The games I played when I was 17 would be T or below. Until MK came out, there were no M games. It was the first.

So, had this system existed then, I would still have been able to play all but one game.

lol

Microsoft KNOWS that a good amount of money comes from underage players, it's in their best interest to get as many people playing their games as possible in order to make the most money.

Same reason why movies get toned down to make a PG-13 rating, R rated movies don't make much money due to the restricted audience.

  • 01.02.2013 1:32 PM PDT

@Vinyl_Hb

Microsoft wouldn't do this because of how low sales would be. Think about it, the amount of minors playing video games is much higher than adults. Keeping them from playing the games means they wouldn't even buy the games. If anything, it comes down to the parenting. Yesterday I was in a game and a 10 year old was using the foulest language I've heard on XBL.

Charlie, i had respect for you until this thread. Shame on you.

Sounds like a terrible idea to me. I played my share of mature games when I was below the intended audience age.

Heck, if this existed in the past, I'd have never gotten into the games I love to this day. Limited access to media based on age is nonsensical and prevents the use of creative influences for minors as they grow into adults.

I remember you used to read threads before responding. It seems like I've said this a hundred times, I've linked a study, done in 2011, that shows the majority of gamers are 37.

They aren't minors. Minors are the minority.

completely idiotic. So ever time I play Fallout, Halo, CoD, Battlefield, ect. I have to put in an ID card? sounds like a complete hassle and taking away from rights. the ESRB sets guide lines and gives advice. It does not make laws and rule with an Iron Fist people. half the time the damn thing sounds like it is filled with Butt-hurt Soccer Moms anyway.
