I'll give you some "popular" songs that are excellent. Tell me why they're bad?

This was recently number 1 in the UK...

I'm not saying all popular music is inherently bad, but I don't see how garbage like this manages to filter its way to the top.

Remember, grammar is the difference between; "I helped my uncle Jack off a horse." And "I helped my uncle jack off a horse."

Look up A Dose of Buckley on YouTube, some of these videos might be relevant to your question.

Most modern songs are about sex. Teenagers are the target audience of these pop songs.

That's the point. Most hip hop is garbage, but people seem to put this hipster filter on music and not listen to anything in the Charts.

Gangam style, nicki minaj, lil wayne, justin beiber, that's all popular music. These just happen to be songs which broke into mainstream, but are not part of the pop genre.

Because it's catchy. Besides that, it is a -blam!- song and i'm surprised it was will.i.am who produced it.

I'm inviting others to critique music for reasons other than its popularity.

tbh, the charts (in the UK at least) is usually filled with garbage, which is why i hardly listen to it.

there are the occasional things i like though.

^This. And the "artists" listed above all suck ass with music. It doesn't sound different or creative when compared to the other songs of that genre. They all sound the same to me and they all deserve to go to music hell.

fair enough.

I find that much of what gets airtime is lacking in authenticity. It doesn't feel real, in many instances because its not. Sure, the beat might be good, the melody catchy, but it lacks that something that allows listeners to connect.

Popular music doesn't mean it has to be from the pop genre and I have no idea what you are talking about. All generations of music have the pop songs and those songs are just for clubs and parties as they are catchy and what not. The modern Alternative songs and hell, a specific song, Somebody That I Used to Know, are some of the best songs in years. Both songs OP mentioned are popular as many many people know of them and they are considered artistic. Go ahead and assume all popular music is trash and poison with your ignorance but there are so many gems if you don't act like a stick is up your butt.

I could name so many popular good modern songs easily.

Upbeat, vocal centered songs about love with light instruments in the background?
Gee, never heard something like that before. Honestly, the songs just feel flat out boring to me. I don't have any valid critique for them right now other than they don't sound interesting at all.

By the gods what are you doing here, well don't just stand there man make the tea! Make yourself useful and look at my Fileshare.

Because it's made to fit the tastes of the majority hence the 'popular', as a result it's generic, void of any real musicality because that's not what the unthinking majority wants to hear.

Of course I'm generalising and there are some good artists that break into the mainstream every now and again.

Its implied that popular music is equivalent to the pop genre, otherwise we could have included beethovens 9th but we didn't. Popular and pop are often interchanged. You should know this.

They are alternative songs yes, that means they are not part of the pop genre(though they do have some overlapping material). Songs can be popular yet not "pop", that's why in my first statement I quoted "popular", because its sort of counter intuitive.

Now, I never said these songs are on the same degree of terrible like "popular songs" such as nicki minaj, katy perry etc. But if you legitimately think these are some of the best songs in years, haha oh wow.

Don't strawman me.
You said, and I quote:

Tell me what's wrong with popular music.

This question is asking about popular music, not the two specific songs you have chosen that don't form a general view of the modern musical industry at all. I talked about said industry. I even said "most songs", so your response is flawed right off the bat. Your response made it look like I was talking about your selections, making it easier for you to form a counter argument. A flawed one, might I add.
