pop music:

music in the Pop genre?
music that is Popular?

i think we really need to sort this out, cus they aren't one and the same.

Pop music is what is popular nowadays.
but rap and hip-hop are popular at the moment but they aren't in the pop genre.

STOP ASSAULT 2012

Who is Assault? Assault is a mod in the Bungie.net brony group. And what started out with good intentions, viciously spiraled down into a power hungry tyrant locking thread after thread after thread to quell all opposition to his tyrannical rule. Did I mention he is a tyrant?

Well we obviously can't be talking about popular music, otherwise we would have to say what's wrong with Michael Jacksons Beat it, and with Tchaikovskys 1812 oveture. And given that most of the criticism of popular music is really criticism against the pop genre, it seems patently obvious what we are talking about.

Technically, they kinda are.

-an aim of appealing to a general audience, rather than to a particular sub-culture or ideology
-an emphasis on craftsmanship rather than formal "artistic" qualities
-an emphasis on recording, production, and technology, over live performance
-a tendency to reflect existing trends rather than progressive developments
-much pop music is intended to encourage dancing, or it uses dance-oriented beats or rhythms

Stolen straight from wikipedia on characteristics of pop music. General audience, not emphasizing artistic qualities(just look at nicki minaj), reflects existing trends, encouraging dancing, not really for live performance, hence autotune.

"What are we holding on to, Sam?"
"That there's some good in this world, and it's worth fighting for."

You can't actually say there's anything "wrong" with any type of music, because it's subjective. I hate both of the songs you posted, but can I actually say they're "bad"? Technically, no.

You try listening to this song. To me, it has more meaning and emotion than any other type of music. Do you see it the same way? Maybe not, but that doesn't make it good or bad.

Submarines is also an awesome Lumineers song imo.

I like what's popular in metal, but nothing else. I'm addicted to Lamb of God's latest along with As I Lay Dyings' latest.

Ah, someone else who likes As I Lay Dying! Every time I reccomend them to someone they assume it'll be bad because they're a religious metal band.

This was recently number 1 in the UK...

I'm not saying all popular music is inherently bad, but I don't see how garbage like this manages to filter its way to the top.

Wadafak was that? :O

Not really reliqious as much as just a band for by Christians - much like any other. I've been stuck on Awakened [AILD], Resolution [LOG], and Baptized in Filth [Impending Doom]. That's what's been fairly popular to me.

People who typically listen to things like this have simplistic mindsets.

If I'm listening to metal, I usually go for AILD, Dark Tranquility, or At the Gates. If I'm listening to rock, usually it's Red, Thousand Foot Krutch or Breaking Benjamin. None of these bands is particularly popular, now that I think about it, but.....

what's wrong with music these days?
so called musicians:
music crafted by DJ's
voice autotuned to the point that it's unrecognizable

so, they don't write their own music, they don't play their own music and they can't even sing to their music without technical aid?

so, how are they musicians? to me they're just faces to a product.

and anything that doesn't fall into that category either tries so hard to be the opposite that it isn't music or is buried underneath so much corporate crap that is universally unheard of.

I meant to say formed by Christians, not for by. If I listen to music, it'll be from my iPod and it'll be what ever is on that, which is only metal. That's the only thing that I really listen to; thus why it is popular for me.

“If we will disbelieve everything, because we cannot certainly know all things, we shall do much what as wisely as he who would not use his legs, but sit still and perish, because he had no wings to fly.” - John Locke

"How can anyone be enlightened? Truth after all is so poorly lit." - Rush

Popular music tends to be simplistic, over-produced, and largely lacking in creativity. This has been the case, really, ever since the widespread use of radio to transmit music. It's often very catchy and here and there gems make it through.

The thing I like about metal is that it almost always has meaning; pop is usually "HAVE FUN! PARTIES!!! DRINKING!!!!" Not always, but it seems that way to me. Most people think metal is just screaming, but if you listen to the lyrics it's easy to see that the bands are passionate about their music.

Precisely, and (being a drummer, I'm biased) the drumming is what keeps me coming back. When you understand the lyrics, tehy are typically pretty good.

Those aren't "popular" songs.

>Not popular
>Top ten on iTunes
>skewed results from little 12 year olds who still buy their music on itunes

Gangam style, nicki minaj, lil wayne, justin beiber, that's all popular music. These just happen to be songs which broke into mainstream, but are not part of the pop genre.

I don't think you understand how many people buy from iTunes, the largest retailer of music, followed by Walmart. Also the fact that those songs are constantly on the Radio. And the Billboard top 100...

They are two very popular song. No way getting around that. iTunes is not "skewed" results in any way.
And yes, the artists you listed are popular too, and overall more so. Been on the charts longer.

Antagonizing me to build a false sense of worth is so damn cute.

"Team shoot the wraith!"
"What's a team shoot and what's a wraith?!"
"It means we all shoot at the big blue thing together!"
"Okay!"
*starts betraying blue teammate*

tendency to follow cookie-cutter song formats
tendency towards mindless repetition and lazy song-writing (see: any Rihanna song)
tendency towards songs completely centered around sex, beer, partying, getting high, swag, acquiring big booty -blam!-es, acquiring money
tendency towards being influenced strongly by commercial incentives

note that these are all tendencies. just because a song is popular or is a "pop" song (almost every remotely well-known song out there is pop of one form or another) doesn't mean its bad, but those top 10 radio hits are almost without fail pretty lame.

Like I said before, music is subjective. I'm not going to criticize your musical preferences, and I hope you'll do me the same courtesy.
