If you're passionate about the thing you're talking about, I'll always lend an ear.
I get where they were going and what they were trying to do with it. The whole weight of the universe on the shoulders of a protagonist vibe.
I just didn't feel it. I got that in Mass Effect with Shepard when you're facing Saren, Going in the Collectors base one last time in ME2, ME3 in London saying farewell and risking it all with the epic raid coming in [ignore ME3 ending].
It was well deserved. Earned. The same can be said in Halo:CE. The warthog run to escape Halo was intense. Making a last ditch escape from an alien planet that you played an entire campaign story to understand. It was unlike anything I had played during it's time.
Halo 2 didn't really have a real ending, a cliffhanger that angrily achieved it's purpose, it just ended when I was ready for more. But the entire campaign experience had been building up epic that made it forgivable and awesome as long as Halo 3 came out to finish it's ties. The story narrative of that game was top notch.
Halo 3 ending, felt like a conclusion. It felt like the final fight was finished. Obviously there was always more in the Halo Universe. But Halo 3 left me wanting more, but understanding that a story, an arc had ended.
Then came Halo 4. It didn't help that I was just indifferent to many of the build up. I really, really enjoyed Halo 4's first cutscene,[I wasn't out to hate Halo 4, quite the opposite, I was finding reasons to like it] it did capture a feeling that I thought would be maintained throughout the campaign. But then I realized past the glitz and glamour of CGI, it was just lazy. The character models, the story, the game. The ending was lackluster, I was just like what can they pull next. Press X to kill Meh more meh. Didact falls down the bridge and has an unconfirmed death [did NOT see that coming] Then the CGI comes on and I'm like cool, the graphics are nice. Another sequence similar to the beginning. I really like the mood they were going for in the CGI scenes in the beggining and end, it just felt like it was undeserved though. Yes, I saved Earth! I just didn't feel like I did.
Showing Johns face was a ballsy move, but to be honest I didn't even care at that point. I really did not enjoy the campaign in general. The Legendary ending was not worth it for me. It didn't leave me wanting more, it left me wanting less.
The only redeeming moments were the CGI and music they had going during the beginning and ending. But that's not what Halo has been about in it's campaign since it's inception. The flashy flash. shiny turd lol.
I enjoyed the Terminals more though, they were better then the entirety of Halo 4's story. But it too was pretty crap when I look at it. It made it typically Sci-fi that I absolutely loathe. Yes, it took it to new directions, but it just wasn't for me. This was really nothing new, the Forerunner Novels have always revealed this atmosphere. I just really hate how stupid it is. It comes down to basic things that I don't agree with. Such as Humanity vs Forerunners [But not really] the devolution and genetic destiny stuff. Basically the majority of what Halo 4 introduced. Is what I just don't like. Halo 4 ending really did not make up for it's entire campaign.
