Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

Colorado Theater shooting victims and families outraged over movie theater reopening.

Should such a place shut down? A school? A theater? A mall?

Does the property owner and/or business (who had nothing to with the tragedy other than where the madman chose to commit mayhem) do those businesses "owe" anything to the memory or dignity of the victims?

Reading the article, the theater went about reopening by mailing the families advance notice and offering an "family member only" evening before opening to the public. I would imagine that the theater was not offering a "Free tickets to watch Django Unchained" but rather for them to gather quietly and privately before the theater opened to the public.

Not very sensitive, and they probably would have been better off not asking/offering/contacting the families at all, but I suspect by trying to resume business, they are in a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" position.

Or am I misunderstanding and should be more aware of what the families want/need? Do they really want the business to never open? Knock it down and make a park?

They should just close the theater room that everyone was killed in.

A cornered fox is more dangerous than a jackal.

And from FOX, two phantoms were born.

It's not the theatre's fault it happened.

I say let them eat popcorn.

No, nothing should happen to the place. The shooter would've gone out and shot at people regardless of the location.

Nah.

They're a business. They didn't ask for someone to gun people down. But things move on.

I don't see a problem with opening the theater back up.

Don't judge a book by its cover, unless it has bacon on the cover, then it is a good book.

close the room that the people were killed in as a memorial, I doubt people would like to sit in that room anyways. Open the rest of the theatre though

it's not like the bodies are still in there

right?

In my opinion, the location owes nothing to the victims families. It was just by change the incident happened where it did. The owner of the place had nothing to do with the tragedy, so why does he owe the family anything? As bad as that may sound.

It's the owners business, with it staying closed for good or knocked down, it's only going to affect the owner and his business.

I doubt the families would want the business to reopen, but they would probably understand if it did. I think they're more appalled that they're being invited back to the theater with a "free screening."

All that is needed for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.

I think they should dedicate Theater 9 (the theater of the shooting) to the victims of the shooting, but closing or demolishing the building is a little too much IMO.

I'm not sure, but I get the impression that they remodeled the multi-plex. In which case, they probably moved walls and changed room numbers so that there would be no way to say "this is the room where it happened". Things would be moved and switched around enough that "that place" would be gone.

If they are at all sensitive or smart, they probably also have a small quiet alcove somewhere with a plaque expressing their shared grief, condolences and empathy to the survivors, their family and the community.

Should have struck while the iron was hot and lobbied govt for money to relocate. Even if they owe nothing else to victims, and tried to be respectful, it's still hard to draw customers to watch a romantic comedy in the same seats 30 people were massacred in.

I think that idea will stop a lot of people from going there.

make it a haunted house on the way in side the theater and bill it as a horror experience.

I don't think it would be to hard to draw customers to the theatre. Like someone else said, they could no use the room and make it a memorial or something.

Or at least put up a memorial or plaque.

Too soon? Yeah, too soon.

I honestly do suspect that the remodeling will make it impossible for someone to say/realize "this is the spot" or "this is the seat". To not do so... poor business and poor PR decisions.

Wheres Meh Sniper?

Youtube page

People shouldn't expect anything out of someones death. I think the theater should annually do something out of respect but nothing permanent like closing.

Which from the businesses point of view should be enough to owe to the families.

Although offering them a free screening at the theatre was a bit distasteful, remodelled or not.

  • 01.02.2013 7:53 PM PDT

No, the theater doesn't owe them anything. business is business.

Sounds like the theater and Cinemark tried to be respectful. They are buisness and closing down for good is just wasteful and you are really only letting the bad people win if you dont let things get back to normal.

I <3 Halo:Reach - amazingly fun and best campaign + amazing Soundtrack
I <3 Halo 3:ODST - best soundtrack + Firefight + Coastal Highway and Mombassa Streets, amazingly unique campaign.
I <3 Halo 3 - best multiplayer levels + Forge + best Custom Games + soundtrack
I <3 Halo 2 - amazing huge fun campaign + soundtrack + Fun multiplayer
I <3 Halo: CE - started it all

I really hate people like that.

Seriously the theatre meant NO harm at all, and yet they get upset. Im sure it really is a terrible thing to go through, loosing a loved one, but they are acting like the theater was mocking them, when they were trying to be friendly and have no harm - as if it were the theaters fault their was a shooting.

You're not thinking from their standpoint though.

"Your son/daughter died at our theater, but here's a free movie".

My final thought is that the theater owes them nothing, but I understand why they are upset.
