Subject: Do you consider video games to be art?

You're either first or you're last.

You'll never amount to anything, go back under your bridge.

Some, but not most.

Not 100%. They use art to convey their stories, but themselves are not art.

It has writing. Which is art.
It has music. Which is art.
It is visually appealing. Which is art.

So why again shouldn't it be art?

  • 01.02.2013 8:20 PM PDT

If abstract is a form of art then yes.

Video games are the playable superior version of movies. And movies are art.

Made it into the update!

What are Video Games?

They are:
Movies
Stories
Paintings
Music
and Entertainment

All in ONE.

And ANYBODY can play them. They're not exclusive.

It's only the Entertainment aspect which people seem to think invalidates video games as art.

But hey, people go to movies for fun. They read for fun. They go to museums (well, older people at least). And they enjoy music.

Video Games, if anything, are the epitome of art if done right.

ooga booga boooh

Video gaming and the culinary arts are the only real art forms prevalent to the masses, I guess. Video gaming is a fantastic form of arts. It's a melting pot of so many art medians, all in one. It's great!

  • 01.02.2013 8:24 PM PDT

I definitely consider them a form of art.

Inappropriate. Went a little to far with the butt hole tearing.

They are beyond art

GOAT

Everything is art.

  • 01.03.2013 6:28 AM PDT

Quick as a razor, sharp as a bullet.

Any artificial creation with an intentional metaphor is art.

  • 01.03.2013 6:28 AM PDT

Donuts > all other food

Of course.

  • 01.03.2013 6:29 AM PDT

Of course it's art. Roger Ebert has nothing but an ageing view of art in that regard, and a totally out-of-context argument against games.

But as art, gaming must go through all the -blam!- every other art form has once in it's life.

Some of them, yes, some of them, no. Though I don't consider every movie, painting or song to be art either.

They're all art; doesn't mean they're good art.

Making a video game is art; playing them is not

  • 01.03.2013 6:39 AM PDT

Hell yes.

Art is... Well, art.
Music is art.

Make that art move and add music and you have a video.

Make that video interactive and fun and you have a video game.

Therefore, video games are art.

This sounded much better and more smart in my head..

Ah, the internet. Where men are men, women are men, and children are the FBI.

Yes, they are. And as for the people saying some games are, and some games aren't, I dont see that as possible. Either they all are, or they all aren't.

I think the art piece Fountain by Duchamp (and, frankly, most modern art) kinda makes the point of what is art is decided by the artist. So if the artist decided it is art, then whether or not you agree, it is art. If I make a drawing on a piece of paper of a stick figure, it is just as much art as Picasso, or Dali, or Quinn. The issue people confuse, I think, is not whether something is art or not, but whether it is good art.

Also, with regards to Ebert's quote, I read an article by him, and he is a dumbass.

So you don't consider movies or music as art forms?

  • 01.03.2013 6:49 AM PDT

Yes, I AM just that awesome.

Yeah, but I'm not going to appreciate one like I would a painting or something.

Teabag twin #1 is here to kick ass and chew gum. And I'm all out of gum.

They're art as much as music and movies are.

  • 01.03.2013 6:55 AM PDT

hmm

Some of them, yeah, but for the most part they're just entertainment.

  • 01.03.2013 6:57 AM PDT

The world is full of mysteries, and shares too few of the answers required. An example of which, is how did I end up in the Brute Zone?

If a messy bed can be considered art, games can be too.

  • 01.03.2013 7:33 AM PDT

Yes, I know my username is the 330th sequel to a terrible movie. You don't have to keep telling me.

Art - The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.

Video games are an expression AND application of human creative skill and imagination, so yes, video games are art.
