A gunman has opened fire in a village in Switzerland, killing three people and wounding two others, police say.

The attack happened on Wednesday at around 21:00 (20:00 GMT) in the village of Daillon in Valais canton, 100km (60 miles) east of Geneva.

Police shot and wounded the suspect after he threatened to turn a gun on them. He has been arrested.

Investigations revealed the man was a known drug addict and former mental health patient, authorities say.

So this article brings up some good points to take into consideration with this.

1. The guy had mental problems which probably caused him to start the shootings.

2. The police TOOK away his guns in 2005, but was unaware of the 2 he had.

3. Every man serves in the army before being given a gun to keep at home.

4. Apparently shooting cats is popular in Switzerland.

5. Unarmed civilians overpowered a gunman in a restaurant.

So we know shootings in Switzerland is rare but the points above show that even a gun filled society has shootings and that you don't need a gun to stop a gun man.

Discuss.

Well somebody thought it was kids shooting cats and going to tell them to stop it.

So it must be a common thing to not be scared of gun shots.

Most soldiers are mentally unstable after service.

Then again they are the Swiss Army.

It's also not true. Every male that is deemed fit does. As they are all part of a trained, armed militia in the event of an invasion. I believe it is also only males aged 20-30.

How?

The training is good, but the idea that all gun owners also must be subjected to government indoctrination is a bit worrisome. It kind of negates the purpose of giving civilians the right to own guns.

1/8 = most?

Most Army personnel see combat?

Nowhere did I say that PTSD isn't a problem. I said it's untrue that most soldiers are mentally unstable after serving.

there was little concrete information about soldiers' mental health.

This difficulty of collecting statistics about post-traumatic stress disorder the likely cause of such dysfunctional behaviour as waterboarding your own daughter is a critical deficit in addressing the human impacts of the long wars that the UK is currently engaged in.

Little evidence means the numbers could be much more.
