If this happens I might just have to go exclusively to PC.

...because you can play used games on PC?

...yes..?

The CD box comes with a code you put in upon installation, but that code can be put in any number of times for every installation...

and after that you can get "no CD" patches.

Five people could be playing with the same copy installed using no-CD patches.

Unless we're talking about downloading games like Steam. -_-

I'm all for it. I've always felt the 2nd hand game business was bad for dev's. I hope Sony does it and everyone else follows suit.

I think the idea of second hand games is great. If I buy a game that I don't like, I can take it back and trade it for another one that I might like better, while putting my copy of the game I didn't like, back on the shelf for someone else that might like it. So y'know which games are the ones that get taken back to the store to be sold used? Usually the old ones(that may or may not still be in print) or the ones that suck. Don't like your games being resold used? Make a better game.
Or you could like...do your research.

Of course having a 2nd hand game market benefits gamers. But it hurts the devs. I side with the dev's and publishers. We wouldn't have games to play without them.

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

LOL at people acting like console manufacturers are being "greedy." GameStop is the one taking 300% profit from the sale of used games, taking money away from the publishers and developers who created those games by acting as a middleman. Those of you who are big into buying and selling used games get bent over a barrel every time you walk into a GameStop, and yet you're acting like console manufacturers are the greedy ones. Please, pull your collective heads out of the sand.

More money going to publishers and developers = more money to develop bigger, better games in the future. If used game sales are prevented, OBVIOUSLY publishers and developers will lower prices on older games and make them available via download for the people who do not like buying games at full price. Which, in fact, they already do anyway but some of you seem to have never noticed.

And now, instead of the money going to a glorified pawn shop, it's going back to the people who made the game in the first place. How is this not an ideal and excellent solution for everybody EXCEPT GameStop?

1. Why don't they like used/second-hand games?
Because they don't make money from used game sales.

But isn't that the same for all second hand stuff? I mean lets say I buy a table and after a while I'm tired of it and plan to sell it to someone else. Why shouldn't I be able to the same thing with my old games?

Or am I just missing the point here...?

I don't recall 38 studio's and big huge gaming being shut down because of 2nd hand games of Kingdom of Amulur or THQ going down to 2nd hand games.

As far as im concerned the 2nd hand games market has been around since I was born 1990 and so far nothing bad has come of it.

I bought a game for around £10 enjoyed the franchise and bought the next 1 full price, that is good for the industry.

If you get rid of 2nd hand games then pirating will sky rocket and hacked/j-tagged/chipped consoles will become more common.

The publishers and devs don't need the money what they need is business sense. Right now they are doing day 1 DLC and season passes all to get money from the consumer before they even get the game.

THQ spent £250m on a failed technology for microsoft and sony which worked on the Wii and are paying the price for it.

Never have I heard of a company closing down due to used games, only that they didn't meet the quota or the game didn't do well enough.

Well, the difference is market size. There's very little market for used furniture; mostly Craigslist and such. There's a huge market for used games.

GameStop is the one taking 300% profit from the sale of used games,

*~45-50% gross profit margin, depending on the quarter

Doesn't even include cost of doing business - like rent or employee wages. No need to exaggerate brah.

Not to sound like a jerk, but I don't care how it affects the devs. If they make a game I didn't like, why should I not be able to give/trade it to someone else that might like it? I bought and payed for it didn't I? Therefore they made money off the the copy, yes? I didn't like it, so took it back and let someone else be able to buy it. If their game is good enough, I don't expect used sales would be too big of an issue for them.

  • 01.03.2013 11:22 AM PDT

Life?
I have the internet and Doctor Who; i don't need a life.

i'm not going to pay full-price for something i can't even sell back if i don't like.
removing the pre-owned games market gives zero incentive for people to experiment with series / developers they aren't sure of. this will hurt devs in the future because those people who didn't buy the first game because they weren't prepared to pay full-price, have less incentive to buy the next in the series when that comes out.

More money going to publishers and developers = more money to develop bigger, better games in the future.

I never noticed how good EA games, Activision games and ubisoft games get better....Oh hang on 90% of their games are annual release of the same crap from the year before.

And last I checked they are the companies trying to get used games gone from the market.

Sorry Foman but its like the music industry and the film industry they cry about needing money but they actually don't.

The gaming industry is bigger than any other in the entertainment business and getting bigger every year, there is no shortage of income.

The problem is publishers and developers don't innovate and want to play it safe, that isn't to do with little money only instead they innovate as little as possible, spend as little as possible and get max profit.

Why would developers want spend more money to make their games? Companies like Infinity Ward are already selling millions of copies even though they rehash the same game over and over again.

Developers would end up spending as much as they do now developing their game while making more money from the removal of used game sales.

I hope that day never comes.

This.

I know all digital content is the future in all forms of any media but denying physical copies is just stupid. I very much prefer to have a book in my hands than a tablet or laptop.

I hope people realize that buying games new and having no used games available to buy means that you might actually have everything on the disc unlocked from the start instead of having to buy on-disc dlc or perhaps even free dlc. Developers have had to resort to these "underhanded" tactics BECAUSE of places like GameStop. They're losing money and in case anyone forgot, it takes a lot of money to make a game from the ground up.

Raise your hand if you're tired of generic military shooters.

More money to developers could mean greater risks, new studios, and new IPs. Not to mention that the cost of games as a whole could go down.

This isn't a bad thing for gaming.

You're approaching this from the wrong angle. First, nearly every publisher and developer would like to eradicate used game sales. Not just the big guys, either. If anything, it's more important for the smaller guys who see lower overall sales numbers.

Second, all your statement does is support my point -- used game sales are currently popular, and there is not as much innovation in the market as you'd like.

Third, if you think these big publishers are rolling in cash, I invite you to check out the annual statements of the publicly held companies such as EA and Activision-Blizzard. This is not a high-margin, high-profit business.

Fourth, the goal of any company is to make money and increase value for its owners/shareholders. Saying that a corporation is spending as little as possible and getting max profit is a compliment, because that is exactly what it is supposed to do. If you value innovation and new IPs over anything else, vote with your wallet and stop buying sequels and remakes.

Yes it is.

The 2nd hand market is not damaging the industry it's a dam lie, they will keep season pass's and disk locked content as long as they can.

They are just lying, I haven't heard Microsoft or Sony (Both publishers) complaining about 2nd hand markets yet they are the ones making the consoles.

It's like hollywood complaining how VHS tape recorders will destroy the industry.....it's still booming last I checked.

What would give developers the incentive to do those things though? They have disc-locked content because of the large amount of gamers who are willing to buy it.

Removing used game sales won't change their business tactics.
