You kind of need to play the ESRB by ear. It all comes down to parenting. Some kids are more mature than others and will be effected significantly less than others by video games. But video games do not cause shootings. Video games have been shown to lessen aggression anyway.

I know how to solve the problem, better parenting.
How is saying that going to help or hinder this debate.

I don't think you guys see what is happening. Its MK1 all over again. The ESRB was founded to show that the industry could police itself. Games were rated so parents would know which games were appropriate, and retailers had guidelines of whom to sell to.

The vocal minority is saying that this isn't enough, and that violence in our culture, with video games as the specific example, are to blame for making rampage shooters act.

Just saying "Better Parenting" would get overlooked, and isn't really relevant to the debate.

How about we actually enforce the ESRB rating system and keep M rated games out of the hands of 12 year olds...

A law gets passed effectively putting violent games in the same category as -blam!- and only an adult with an ID can purchase them from the "backroom" at the game store.

The people aren't worried about their kids playing. They are worried about the next rampage shooter being inspired by 'No Russian' and acting on it.

This isn't about parenting.

How would you do that? You have parents and older people that buy M rated games for younger kids. There's nothing the ESRB can do once that person buys the game.

You warn and alert the parents more. Show them what their kids are going to be exposed to so when a shooting happens AGAIN, videogames won't be to blame. The parents will be.

The thing is, how do you define a "violent" game?

Is it anything that depicts any kind of reckless behavior?

How about racing games, are those violent?
NFS: most wanted? Violent?
NFS: Pro Street: Violent?

Skateboarding games? Violent?

WHAT GAMES ARE CONSIDERED VIOLENT OR NOT?

No Russian gives you the option to skip.

Prove to me that people are acting based on levels in a game, and then we'll have a discussion.

The people say that kids grow into violent grown ups based off of violent video games. So this is about kids.

Sorry, but games aren't protected speech. All it would take is the Supreme Court ruling that they are profane, and then that's it. No more violent games. It really is that simple.

If a large enough movement gets behind this, that WILL happen.

For all questions with answers unknown to you, the proper procedure is to assume the answer is peanut butter.

While that may be true, I'm just going to pretend otherwise.

I find it hilarious that many of these same people so opposed to these movements to ban violent games also support the movement to ban firearms. Neither of them are responsible for these tragedies. Crazy and/or stupid people are responsible.

I feel pretty confident that the movement won't gather any steam in Canada, so I'm largely unconcerned atm

I think the solution get some people that have balls and debate these people on television. Something I've noticed in the video game nation is that nobody seems to want to go and fight these people that believe in such misplaced ideals. Better parenting is a key because the culture would not continue to be so violent if parents cared to take violence out of the children's lives.

Which in itself is hypocritical.

I don't have to prove it to you, derp.

We have to prove that they aren't harmful to the angry parents that want to burn our games.

Whay is this so hard to see? You act like I am the one arguing against violent games. I'm not. But there is a very vocal minority that is being listened to right now, and if they get their way, we would be in possession of the last generation of violent games made.

They are protected art which is protected by freedom of speech. There was a Supreme Court decision back a few months ago I believe.

If there is no proof to back it up, then what's the point in burning something simply because of an idea? Games aren't religious books.

The proof that they aren't harmful is the fact that we can't prove that they are harmful. It's proof enough, anyways.

This isn't hard to see.

How am I acting like you're arguing against it? I'm defending my point.

No offense Charlie but I'm not surprised by their reactions. Often times your opinions are very hard to discern.

There's nothing wrong in violent video games. It's not the video games' fault that people are shooting little children in the face. The person responsible should be held accountable and not put it all down to some -blam!- vidoegames that most people play without breaking the law in some fashion or other. I mean seriously, these people need to get themselves a life or at least stop pretending that they have one...

Exactly.

A video game is meant to be what it is. A video game.

Everybody claims that kids get desensitized by them, when it's up to the grown ups to buy the game for the kids in the first place.
